Project Runway

I was unexcited by last night. Usually, I feel strongly about something, love it or hate it. Maybe because I wasn't excited by the challenge.
Design a Couture Dress.

I'm not a fan of couture in general. I think that it's often just a big mess, or crazy, or impractical. I understand the skill and creativity that goes into it, and that other fashion is derived from it, but I very rarely like it, much less love it.

That said, my take on this week:

They’re still in Paris (poor Angela has gone home) and they go to Montmartre to sketch. It is one of the most beautiful places in Paris, looks over the whole city. ”pimpdaho” and I visited it on our grand tour of Europe eons ago. Just lovely and very inspirational. It was apparently very hot in Paris, which sucked for them, since Europe is not known for its AC.

-- I was disappointed in Laura's dress. It was derivative, very simple. It didn't say couture to me. The collar was not elaborate enough to make it couture. Tim disagreed with me. He thought that he could easily see an older woman wearing it, and I agree with him after some though. I was also disappointed that the collar went down. She could have stiffened it up with some hairspray. Her model wore the hell out of it, though. Much better than the french model.

-- Jeffrey's dress said couture to me, mostly because it was a big mess. His model in NY really sold it, though. At first I criticized him for being crazy because he had immunity, but I in retrospect think that he might have done the same thing even if he hadn't had immunity. I don't like him, but he does take chances, and that's a good thing.

-- I quite liked Kayne's dress. I didn't think it was tacky at all. They keep talking about his taste level, and I see their point, but it's not as bad as all that. I thought that the skirt was gorgeous, and I liked the elaborate top with the corset. The lacing in the back was terrific, I loved the way it curved to the side. I liked the contrasting brown ribbon in the from that came to the side. Couture is supposed to be over the top, and it was. Kayne needs to listen to Tim more. Every time Tim has said that he doesn't like something, the judges have dinged him. Of course, creative editing probably prevents us from seeing the times that Tim doesn't like something that the judges love it.

-- Give Michael props for really pushing himself with the ruching and the hand sewing. I liked the dress, even more when they pushed the boob petals down. This was something that he had never attempted before and I think that he did a good job. Not great, mind you, it was definitely his weakest design of the season, but a good try.

- GOODBYE CRAZY MAN!! So glad he's gone. He really "turned me off". The bottom of his dress looked like flocked wallpaper that you'd find in someone's dining room. The top fit atrociously, and those sleeves were hideous. I didn't see the hand work in his dress, either, and neither did Tim. Tim went off about the gluing of the hem. One thing I will say about Vincent, he owns his designs. He never makes excuses or says that he was trying to do something else. He just says "eh, I like it".

-- I liked Uli's dress the best. I liked the color, and the bodice a lot. I'm not crazy about the braiding, but it's what made Uli's dress an "Uli". it also added some nice detail to the dress, hid the seams and made it seem more finished.

And speaking of the models, I didn't think that it was fair for them to fit the dress on one model in Paris, then fit another model in New York. Kayne in particular suffered from that. His dress fit the Paris model perfectly, but not so much for his model in NY.

I listened to Tim’s podcast, and I think that he has a little crush on Michael. He was so into it when he was talking about Michael’s design this week, and how it was just a misstep. He said that he would have thrown himself across the doorway if Michael had been eliminated. And did you notice that he sat next to Michael on the plane to Paris? Coincidence? I don’t think so.

So, who's going next week? I predict Kayne.
