So I started classes yesterday, Russian was scary since I don't know very much of it and the teacher didn't speak English. By the end of class though, I started kind of getting what she was talking about. The other classes I have (lots of lit classes, a labor studies one, and a feminist one)are going to be more work than last year though, they're all smaller with stricter attendance policies and more homework and participation and not sleeping required. But on the other hand, now that I'm not writing for any certain magazine and spending 60 or more hours a week working in NY, I have more free time to work on that stuff.
In the meantime, I'm busy riding my bike and running and hopefully starting to use the college's pool to start training for the triathlon.
I'm hoping to start helping Tom plan some alleycats around here, and just starting to get really used to riding fixed. I haven't used a brake yet! (OK, I fell yesterday but that was because a car made me have to try to hop up onto a sidewalk to avoid getting hit, and that isn't the easiest thing to do, especially in the pouring rain)
Food not Bombs is taking off in New Brunswick, I'm really proud of how many people were at the last meeting, and we're starting to serve this coming Saturday, and then starting the 24th, regularly every Sunday. It's a lot of planning and work, but I think it's worth it. I can't believe how many people are into it, and really want to see it off the ground.
My zine is all over the country, thanks to a friends band when they went on tour, and I keep getting emails about it, and that makes me super psyched. My friend from Baltimore and I (we met because of zines) are going too start a joint zine as well, with just our ridiculous question/answer emails we used to send each other when we first started getting to know each other.
My friend (from the band that stayed with me when I was in VA Beach, Screaming Females) moved into his dorm and got assigned this awesom roommate Ian. I met him Saturday at a huge dance party, and when I met him, I realized I had known him from stuff in Philly for years! He used to be in the band Mothra, and knows Brett and Gary, and actually played at Ghosthouse! But anyway, Ian lived in West Philly, knows a lot of my friends, and danced in hot pants at a RAMBO show I was at. Actually, he was Hunter S. Thompson at Hallowmas. And even better, he speaks fluent Spanish and used to be involved with Food Not Bombs. So that's awesome.
Speaking of dance parties, I had an amazing time on Saturday at the one I went to in Brooklyn, with Nick and Screaming Females, et cetera. And it was awesome seeing Max again on Saturday, even if it was only for an hour.
My dad asked me yesterday why he hasn't seen Steve all summer, and genuinely seemed sad that he hasn't been around. Also, he threatened to hit a 37 year old guy that asked me out when we went to a bar. I love my dad.
Hmm.. I think that about sums up my life at the moment. School, work, bikes, food not bombs, dance parties... this is going to be a good year.
