Many years ago, at my annual women's retreat, I asked a good friend how she was able to keep Shabbat every week. "How are you able to do it all in the midst of your hectic, high-profile professional life?" I asked. She looked at me with an odd expression and said, "I could not do what I do without the Sabbath." Shabbat is special time. Time regulated by the sun, not a clock. A period of contemplation, prayer and quieting of the mind. A time in which to honor our souls. A special island in time. It separates us from the rest of the week. It protects us from the rest of the week. It is a time to go within. It is holy time. It is a gift.
