so i was over at the church and found this sweet pamphlet called 'what you should know about lent.' i think to myself, well, if i should know it, i better read it. in the comfort of my own home i digested the little book.
apparently 'lent' comes from 'lente' which is middle english for 'springtime.' interesting. what if it came from middle english 'lenden', (to lend)? like, god lent us christ for a while, then he took him back.
lent begins on ash wednesday and ends on easter. so you start but putting schmutz on your face, then a man in a bunny suit comes to give you candy. i like it.
'observing lent prepares us to celebrate easter more thoroughly though--
'penitential practices/fasting and self-denial enable us to better understand the full meaning of easter
'repentance/remembering personal inadequacies and shortcomings and recalling the baptismal commitment can lead to inner renewal
'resolution/recalling christ's suffering encourages us to strive for more christian habits and attitudes
'participation/ special lenten and holy week worship services help worshipers renew and strengthen their faith'
so thats a lot. apparently 'fasting and self-denial' are keys to celebration. did i miss something? also, i dont find it healthy to dwell on my myriad shortcomings, plus how am i supposed to remember my 'baptismal commitment' i was a drooling little baby, and some guy poured water on my face, i was committed to crying, is all i was. 'recalling christs suffering'...hmmm so like *if you dont do things our way, youll be nailed to a cross too!* that would get me to go to church. and lenten...there you go.
