Weezer is back. And this time, it might not suck balls!
Like everyone else, I've only heard the first single, "Pork and Beans." And if it's any indication, The Red Album might be somewhat ok. Now, I'm not like every other Weezer fan out there; I don't really care if we get another Blue Album or Pinkerton. I just don't want another Make Believe. Hell, at this point, I'd settle for another Green Album (which wasn't the loathsome musical abortion most fans make it out to be).
You know, I've been a fan since I bought Blue on cassette tape way back in '94. And like the others, I went through my Pinkerton phase between the ages of 13 to 16. Since then, though, I've gone back to Green and Maladroit. While they're not my favorite albums, they sound different and fresh. The Green Album had some simple yet deceptively clever tunes, and I didn't mind that the solos just echoed the chorus. On the other hand, Maladroit showed off Rivers' somewhat underutilized shredding abilities. Both albums proved that Weezer could pull off complete stylistic 180s and still sound familiar (and even more important, good). But they lost something with Make Believe. Rivers and Co. set about trying to recreate the first two albums to placate whiny fans, while just a quick listen to the discarded A5 demos show that they were onto something bigger and better.
Even though I don't care that much, I would like an album that recaptures the sound and feel of the first two. But I know, you know, we all know that it just won't happen. Think for a moment: Would you really be a fan of a band the keeps releasing the same goddamn thing over and over again? If that's what you really want, you'd be better off listening to Lenny Kravitz. Make Believe was a major step backwards for Weezer, and I'm hoping that the Red Album will be a giant leap into something new, and fingers crossed, good.
