A Southland hook up?

It’s hard out there in the hood. Good thing the officers of Southland have each other to lean on. But some fans have been campaigning for two of TNT’s officers - namely Ben McKenzie’s Ben Sherman and Regina King’s Lydia Adams, to take their camaraderie from the streets to the sheets!

“Regina and I were joking about that and we’re both game,” Ben told me at this past weekend’s Independent Spirit Awards. “There’s nothing in the scripts yet, but there’s such sexual tension there. I've always told them I think there should be a romantic relationship because we don't have any particularly happy relationships on our show. And there are cops with happy relationships.”

But Regina has her reservations, telling me, "I think it would take some very creative writing to make that fit well. The good thing about Southland is that all of the storylines are realistic and that would really push the envelope. I just want to tell honest stories."

Still under contract, Ben and Regina must be given an answer on a second season by June, but both anticipate word coming down from TNT in the next few weeks. Both are hopeful, noting solid ratings and increasingly strong scripts.

"The critics are really supporting us," says Regina. "And the fans are continually writing in to let TNT know how they feel."

"We really believe in the show," adds Ben. "I have a sense of what they want to do if there is a second season, because we were going to shoot more episodes (for NBC, before they canceled the show last year). They want to give my character a real crisis of conscience - a decision that would be very very poor, but give him closure on something and test him. Up until now all you've seen is a very straight-laced ambitious guy, but there's always a flip side to that. There's got to be something he's hiding internally."

Let's hope what he's hiding is a torch for Lydia!
