Small Cove of the Beach - Thursday Afternoon

Katara pulled her knees up towards her as she watched the waves break against the sand.  She'd wanted to go to this Mexico so very much and see a new ocean, but she didn't want to make the clinic short-handed and so stayed in Fandom.  At least she had an ocean here after all, and a bedroom all to herself since Chad and Teddy had gone up to New York

He'd just been training really, there had been no intention of running into Katara, but it just seemed to happen.

Zuko hesitated, his hands sliding into the pockets of his jeans and then he slowly made his way over. "Hi."

Katara jumped, too involved in her own thoughts to have heard him come, but when she looked up, she smiled. "Hi."

It was a better reaction than the one he'd received from her last time and Zuko relaxed a little. "Hey. Um... Am I interrupting?"

[southernbender]

She shook her head. "I was thinking of home. You can sit down if you like."

[thebluespirit]

"Oh," he hesitated before he moved closer, but he made sure to keep a safe distance between them as he sat down in the sand. "Do you miss it?" he asked softly.

[southernbender]

Katara nodded, resting her chin on her arms as she looked out at the water again. "Do you miss anything about your home?" She couldn't refer to it as the Fire Nation. It made it too weirdly real.

He glanced at the water for a long moment before he slowly shrugged. "My uncle," he said quietly and then even softer. "My mother."

She gave him a sidelong glance, remembering what he'd told her about his mother last year. "Would she have liked you to be here?"

"I don't know," he said honestly and he played with the edge of his shirt. "She's alive," he confessed and he wasn't sure why he was telling her this at all.

[southernbender]

Katara looked up in surprise? "Really? How wonderful. Have you seen her?"

[thebluespirit]

"No," he said softly and shrugged. "She's somewhere in the Earth Kingdom. Looking for her, it would just put her in danger."

[southernbender]

She bit her lip but reached to just touch his arm. "Still. You'll be able to go find her later. After it's safe."

[thebluespirit]

The touch startled him, but he nodded slowly. "Yes. After it's safe," he agreed and he wondered how long it would take. "What will you do then?" he asked.

[southernbender]

"I don't know," she said softly. "I can't imagine it."

[thebluespirit]

"Oh," he frowned a little. "But you believe in it, right?"

[southernbender]

Katara looked at him, her head resting on her arm. "Yes. More than anything."
