As most of you are aware, several tornadoes ripped through the Southeast, particularly in Alabama, the state I have lived in my entire life, decimating small towns and big cities. Several small towns have basically been wiped off the map. Large cities, such as Tuscaloosa, are destroyed beyond imagining. I believe the number of fatalities is around 240 in Alabama alone, and probably to climb even more as rescue efforts continue, with a count of over 300 total in the affected states. Countless lives lost, homes and properties destroyed... it's been a very surreal 48 hours, to say the least.
I was in Tuscaloosa when the tornado hit and it was the most terrifying time of my life. I'm fine, I'm not hurt aside from a minor concussion, bruises and scratches from being tossed around. Praise God. I was able to get back to Birmingham yesterday afternoon and my apartment is fine. The area where I live in Birmingham avoided most of the storms--they passed either north of us or south of us.
Pictures and videos on the web cannot begin to describe the destruction and chaos of the affected areas. Relief efforts have already started and it's been awe-inspiring watching these groups provide truck after truck of needed items. If you can spare a good thought or prayer for those my state, and the other affected states, I would greatly appreciate it. I know I haven't posted in a year or more or kept in touch with any of you, but I wanted to let you all know what was going on.
It's going to be a long road to recovery but I have no doubt that my state, my beloved state that has blessed me beyond measure, and its awesome, inspirational, dedicated, strong, compassionate citizens will heal.
