My love for all things Olympics is pretty damn big. Perhaps my favorite thing of any Games is the Opening Ceremony and, in particular, the Parade of Nations. Yes, I know some people find it boring (I do not want to know these people) but for me, there is just something so... magical and inspiring seeing the participating nations marching in, so incredibly proud to be representing their countries. Especially the smaller countries that have one or two athletes, who may not have a chance at winning a medal, but are just so incredibly happy to be there with the whole world watching them. And when the USA team walks in, I'm all \O/ USA! USA! \O/ USA!!
I teared up several times during the ceremony and the Parade of Nations, but never more so than when the Georgian delegation entered the stadium to cheers and a standing ovation. I can't imagine what those athletes are going through in the wake of the horrifying and tragic accident that claimed one of their young athletes, but watching them walk around the stadium, their grief and determination evident on their faces, had me crying. It was a truly moving moment.
Overall, I enjoyed the Opening Ceremony very much and I thought Canada and Vancouver did a terrific job. There were some great performances (kd lang's "Hallelujah" was amazing) and, aside from the glitch during the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, seemed to go off without a hitch. The video they showed to open the Ceremony, with the shots of the Canadian landscapes and the recitation of the previous Games' sites, was so, so beautiful and breath-taking that I was thiscloseomg to booking a flight to Canada. So gorgeous.
Whoo-hoo, it's the Olympics!
