I finally got to see The Hunger Games today.
Despite the fact that the movie was over two hours, it felt so QUICK to me and my friend. It all seemed to happen so fast. We wanted more! There was hardly anybody at the show we went to, and nobody was annoying, thank God. The only real reactions people had were laughing when Haymitch gave Katniss the thumbs-up after her private session, and gasping when Rue died and when Thresh killed Clove.
I'll probably go back to see it with a friend who hasn't read the books, and I'll be interested to see what he picks up on. There were some things that I thought might not have come across if you hadn't read the book. I don't think they really got across how hungry people were in District 12. I'm not sure it was shown enough how desperate and starving Katniss was when Peeta threw her the bread. And how overwhelmed she was by all the amazing food on the train.
I liked the scenes they included that weren't in the book: Seneca and Snow, the control room, the start of the revolt in District 11. I think it did well setting up what's next. Having Caesar and his co-host play exposition fairies was no doubt helpful to those who hadn't read the book.
My friend wanted more of Katniss not being sure whether she could trust Peeta or not, as he thought that was the most interesting part of the book.
I wasn't feeling Josh as Peeta at first, but he won me over as the movie progressed. Guess they didn't have to amputate his leg. He and Katniss didn't seem quite bedraggled enough at the end.
I would never have thought to cast Woody as Haymitch, but he was great.
Small detail that bugged me all out of proportion: Buttercup is NOT a tuxedo cat! He has "muddy yellow fur." Since Buttercup is my favorite character next to Cinna, that really annoyed me. How hard is it to find a yellow cat? Not hard at all! Ah, well, I'll put it down to color-blind, equal-opportunity cat casting. (With a nod to those horrid racist Twitter people who were bent out of shape about Rue being black when, you know, she was black in the book.)
Amandla was perfection as Rue. I was really impressed by her in Colombiana, too. I wish we'd gotten more of her. More of Cinna, too. I  Cinna.
I still don't believe Cato killed Thresh. I just don't see it. Didn't believe it in the book, either. I prefer to believe that he was taken out by something deadly the gamesmakers sent in retaliation for the uprising in District 11.
I didn't think the muttants were scary enough. They just seemed like angry dogs.
Now, they're going to have a helluva tough time satisfying the fans with whoever they cast as Finnick. That's gonna be a tough role to cast.
