The plumbing in town was far more of an event than we had bargained for. We knew we had a leak, as there was water in the yard, and it wasn't raining. We turned the water off at the curb, so it could dry out under the house before the plumber could even go find the problem.
Turns out to solve the problem would have required a patch upon a patch upon a old and shot pipe. He quoted us a price for that, and then quoted a price to get the place re-piped. Decided that since we'd had issues (different plumber) back around year end, we'd end up spending the re-do money in short order anyway, so gave them the go-ahead.
Three trips later we have pex tubing rather than the galvanized pipe from the shut off (by the house) to the floor. He said the pipes in the walls seldom caused issues, and so we didn't have to tear out walls - thank goodness. In the process of doing that, they managed to get the pipe from the shut off to the meter (at the curb) to leak and they had to bring in the backhoe and partially dig up the front yard.
The rest of that pipe is not in good condition, but T'B can get at that, so he'll be doing that one of these days. It is nice to have water on demand again - but was also nice we could head to the farm in between and get a shower. Hopefully we don't have to see them again any time soon.
