As to Francis's thought processes, well... first of all, there's before the book, when he first meets Michael. Here's this strange guy who Francis doesn't know, and he's quiet and maybe kind of cute and he makes no sense and he's clearly lonely and he makes up countries. And Francis is interested, even intrigued. He wants to know more about this kid and about the country he's made up, and he thinks that that second part is really cool and he wants to be able to do something like that. So he swipes the map and remakes it and he comes back, and Michael actually likes it, and he's got kind of a nice smile, and Francis wants to know more about him. Francis recognizes that Michael is lonely and kind of screwed up, and Francis wants to help him out of that, but he also wants to figure him out, to know how his mind works. So they're friends. And then they're getting closer and building up Evgard together, and it isn't that Francis hasn't had friends before, but usually they just kick a ball around and smoke and maybe grumble about school. They don't really do anything. And now Michael is taking him off to visit castles and making Francis really actually use his mind and he's interested, and Francis has never had that. He's never known anyone who makes up countries or wants to get so involved in all of this, and Michael thinks this makes him a freak, but Francis likes that. He likes that Michael isn't like anyone else, and that he makes Francis think differently. He's kind of a breath of fresh air (because I also get the sense that Francis just coasts along in school and doesn't get along with his family and is bored.) And on top of that, I think Francis becomes even more aware that Michael is screwed up - he doesn't realize the full extent of it, obviously, but he recognizes that the other guy isn't healthy. And he's concerned. He wants Michael to be happy.
And then the plot of the book happens.
