I keep spending money .... on schoolbooks! 80 dollars here. 20 there. Last week I spent 30. Two weeks ago I spent another 40. And don't get me wrong - I love buying books. But not when I don't have money. I don't even want to read them. I buy them, but don't read them. I buy them, then play Smash Brothers or a drinking game or ... my all time favorite ... "what-am-I-going-to-eat-for-dinner-tonight?"
The more books I buy, the less I'll eat, how about that? That's a diet plan I can work with. Those are rules I can live by. That's a budget I can afford.
Once, an old friend of mine said, "Julian, I love that you and I are the only ones not on a budget."
And we laughed and furrowed at the thought but didn't give it much thought, because of course I didn't buy things I would have liked to buy or throw money into the wind without precaution.
It's just a thought, an idea, and a little known concept called a lie.
