Two things to talk about today!

I saw the new Doctor Who! I mostly felt like, as with most first episodes, it was an adjustment period for the new Doctor - so it's hard to tell what Capaldi is going to be like just from this. But I enjoyed it a lot more than I've enjoyed most Who lately (which, to be fair, is...not saying much) and I am looking forward to what they do with it. Capaldi has charisma and then some, and he just acted the fuck out of the sometimes-dodgy material. I think Jenna Coleman did better with him than she's been doing with Matt Smith too; she impressed me. I am hopeful!

Aaaand, I have a new fandom! I've just finished season 2 episode 2 of Scott and Bailey, and I am IN LOVE.

I think this show might have been written for me! I mean: police procedural, with ALL the ladies, that is funny, AND is set in my city? I can't believe I didn't know any of those things before.

Janet Scott and Rachel Bailey are both delightful in their own ways. I love that it's not divided simplistically into "one's a wife and mother, the other one is a tearaway" type of thing. They ARE very different people, but they both see the value in what the other has and is, and that fundamental equality is absolutely integral to both their relationship and the show. That's so refreshing I can't even DESCRIBE.

Also, omg, this show has the best way of dealing with fuck-ups. Basically everybody on it has fucked up at some point, and I'm only partway into season 2; but they're never villified for it. The people who ARE judged are the ones who refuse to accept they've done anything wrong, who basically are assholes. Being a douchebag is separated from being someone who messes up, and I love that. I looooove eeeeeeeeeet.

AND it is actually Mancunian! I know a bunch of the major locations, and even those I don't... it's so, so clearly ACTUALLY SET HERE. And while I like a bunch of things set in London or New York or LA or whatever.... there are few enough fictional depictions of my city that it is incredibly special and lovely to me to have this one. The last big one was Life on Mars, and okay, that was good, but this is much more my heart.

Basically, I love them ALL. I love Janet and her responsibility and her ability to just grab an issue by the throat and make it talk to her. I love Rachel and her TRULY TERRIBLE personal decision making that is still understandable when paired with her professional genius. I love Gill and how she's the awesome boss who kicks ass but also has an actual life and friends and hates talking to the press. I love that Janet's kids are in it the perfect amount, and are perfectly drawn when they are. It's GREAT.
