Oh God, Katie, I hated Affinity SO MUCH. I read it YEARS ago, in college, and it made me SO MAD, on SO MANY LEVELS. /o\ It suffered from the Ethan Frome syndrome of "things suck! WAIT, THEY COULD GET BETTER! *false hope* Nope, everything is even more shit than it was". I can't handle that :((((

Yeah, it was waaaaay too bleak for me to really love it, too. I wanted things to work out so much, even though it was obvious it wouldn't! And then the reveal is done in the MOST DEPRESSING WAY EVER.

Affinity made me really sad, and left a sour taste in my mouth. Fingersmith did the Surprising Reveal and Betrayal! thing more successfully, I felt. Maybe that's cos I'm a sap who likes a happy-ish ending.

I think I was braced because I read Fingersmith first? But yeah, I loved what Fingersmith did with that waaay more.
