lest auld acquaintance be forgot, or something

I am going back to work tomorrow - wah, do not want! - so I am going to post. I got called a "quiet little pumpkin" today, no really my lol was great; this probably means I should actually post more! Especially cause it is newsbot3's birthday today, and that deserves a bit of a hurrah of the 'I am lucky in my friends!' variety. Which applies generally, obviously, and is something I hope to keep focus on now we're in a Shiny New Decade or whatever, but is definitely apt today. :)

*does very dignified and sedate celebratory boogie*

I also got super lucky in Yuletide! I got three Persuaders fics - just look at them! seriously, one has gay marriage in it, even. - AND a Nero Wolfe fic, and I can now happily know it was thanks to Laceymcbain and Aja and Carmilla. *many many hearts because that is my entire number of Yuletide gifts DOUBLED in ONE YEAR holy effing what fans are fantastic*

As for me, I wrote Rex Stout fic! It is:

Little Town Blues
(Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin, probably about PG13)

A case hits a little close to home.

And it was for
jest, which was simultaneously really awesome and TERRIFYING.

(Also awesome? The Archive Of Our Own! Forget about vaguely-ambivalent: I am actively squeeful. I think it's really easy to use, and potentially really and seriously exciting in terms of getting to have a fandom experience that everyone can share while also being easily modded to fit how each individual person approaches it. Plus, while the servers did have their problems, they did not break as in previous years, despite the EPIC uploading! Dudes, that is some seriously cool stuff right there, and it's still growing and getting better.)

Oh and I saw Doctor Who and the Sherlock Holmes movie. I knew I wanted to say something else.

Doctor Who - well, it wasn't the End of Time, was it. I was hoping Matt Smith would be magically great at the end, but mostly he looked and acted like Ten and yelled "Geronimo", which, um, if that is the latest catchphrase? I am seriously not sure I can watch the new season. Just: no.

(Okay, that's a lie, I almost certainly will watch the new season anyway.)

Sherlock Holmes! Okay, I love love love love the canon, so much, and I went in telling myself, "Self! Be calm, perv on Robert Downey Junior, and all shall be well. Do not expect it to be anything at all to do with the Sherlock Holmes you know from stories! That way lies madness."

(Yes, my internal monologue likes speechifying. I've tried to stop it. Sorry.)

And it was awesome! It was gay in the married way rather than the they're-about-to-have-sex-onscreen-aren't-they way, but that ended up being a good thing. I wasn't expecting it, but about three minutes in I realised they were making a rom-com out of the time Watson and Holmes split up (no really, change EITHER to a woman, and that is the 'they're exes splitting up the communal home but they can't quite manage to ACTUALLY split up' plot right there!), and I wasn't sure what to make of it, but then I figured what the hell and ended up really enjoying myself, despite the who'd'a'thunk'it moment where the denoument is on the half-built bridge for no reason at all.

It was silly and exuberant but it never felt like it was somehow dissing Doyle or classic fans or anything at all. Watson had his bull pup, Mary was AWESOME, Irene... okay, was kind of shipped with Holmes a bit OTTly and also is BARELY related to her canon self at all, but she was also kind of awesome in her own way. Neither was at all pathetic or useless, and while it would be nice if the movie passed the Bechdel test, Holmes canon is not exactly great on that one either, so I wasn't expecting the movie to do anything else. And despite the We Are So Ripping Off The DaVinci Code Right Now!!! LOL!!!-ness, Holmes pulled a scientific explanation out of his ass at the last minute in proper traditional style! :D I can cope with that.

My biggest problem was actually still that Jude Law is taller than Robert Downey Junior. Watson being snarky because Holmes is frustrating him? Canon! Holmes being a slightly crazed drug addict who is generally a slob excepting on cases (and personal hygiene, dudes, but hey at least RDJ cleans up nicely and we got to see him in evening wear)? Canon!

And oh, Watson! Watson is my FAVOURITE - he is smart and he is useful and he is in love and "he" wrote those stories! *sigh* - and I LOVED that he kicked ass in this. He stood up for himself and did his own thing and told Holmes exactly what was what but still loved Holmes anyway, which is a dynamic I am weirdly a sucker for and is way closer to canon than most people remember, and he was totally useful and Doctor-y! Robert Downey Junior is way more my thing than Jude Law, but Jude Law's performance was really fun and felt like he was having so much fun snarking it up with RDJ that it was pretty much impossible not to enjoy it too. Neither was book Holmes and Watson, but having slightly cracky steampunky fanfic? TOTAL WIN.

And dude, the ending with Moriarty? Even I can tell that spells SEQUEL and I am so looking forward to it. :D
