The main thing that happened today involved one of my grandmother's friends giving me a load of yarn. And when I say load, I mean THIS:

My trying to work out how to put a White Tree of Gondor emblem on a square for my patchwork quilt might be quite far removed from the first knitters, but we are still essentially doing the same thing

EEeeee I was just talking to Megan and trukkle about getting my very own White Tree. :D

Did you teach yourself to knit or did someone show you?

I thought so! (It's SO much easier to actually do it than it is to follow the instructions. I find written instructions on knitting things almost impossible to follow, a lot of the time. And if you like, I'll absolutely teach you one day. :) )

I am eight kinds of jealous of your yarn stash. I am so poor at the moment that instead of buying new yarn for a project I unravelled a cardigan I knit last year (which wasn't that well sized) so I had something to knit with. Now I am just beginning the final sleeve of my new cardigan so soon I will sew it up and see whether it shall suffice.

I note that you have some pretty red and green yarn. I recommend that you make a strawberry hat for Oscar. I like to think of it as a tomato hat, personally. I made this for a baby that my friend is going to have any day now (she's 2 weeks overdue) and it's gorgeous. But you need to check the actual numbers - I think there's a problem with the pattern that I need to sit down and work out. Do you use DPNs? You need them for this project.

I think if you cast on a multiple of 10 stitches the pattern would work - 70 should suffice.

The yarn I got is mostly mis-matched, so there's not enough of any one type to do a large project, but if you'd like some I would be happy to share the wealth. :) (I'm right in thinking shipping yarn to you shouldn't be a problem, right? I don't need to do anything to stop it getting too hot or anything?)

The hat is really cute - and definitely a tomato. (His mother is quite anal about Baby's fashion choices, though, so she'd be appalled. Heeee.) My gran has lots of DPNs I can use, so maybe I'll try!

I see a couple colours in there that could make some nice little Adipose. :3 Another Luna-C lady had a knitted one with her at RavenCon.

Adipose are cute and very knittable! I also like the idea of knitting a Tribble or something. *g*
