... in which I try to live vicariously through myself

I thoroughly enjoyed today's Higniffy. I have this thing with Higniffy where I kind of compare it to its heydey. It's like how the Daily Show got much better once they had the crazy evil of the Bush administration and the awful media response to them to riff off; the show is better when it's got more of a chance of influencing things, and right now it kind of doesn't, because what it has to say is what everybody else is saying anyway. It has no antithetical establishment to go against right now - it is the establishment - and that's always tough. But tonight was funny and worth watching anyway: they really used Alistair McGowan well, without overdoing it.

The main thing that surprised me was how sad I felt for the Tory. I mean, absolutely he's a douche, but when Ian was all "yeah, we don't have a minority party any more; we have generals" my main thought was "ow". That's painfully true, and because I am me I couldn't help thinking "wow, it must suck to be told you're obsolete on national television".

Ian and Paul are still smiley love. I do adore how they seem to more consider themselves the team in all the senses that matter, with the competition just being a random add-on to make a show. Love! Also: peagloss and Call My Bluff, both of which rocked the socks.

QI was fantastic. It is the show that is closest to having been designed for me, and hi, this week Alan was smart and a girl won! By, like, a LOT! I love Ronnie Ancona and her beautiful, beautiful story about 'obscurity' and also her knowing about Mary Kingsley and reading in a lovely voice and such. I love Stephen - I love that he really does find things funny and just keel over giggling and that when the picture of Hugh as the 'world's biggest drip' came up he really did go "oi! no!". I love that it's never the Blue Whale. I love the idea of Alan being knighted, hee.

I think my favourite thing about QI is just that it's so very much about being a huge nerd - nerd is the default setting. It's home for geeks. And not just geeks: dorky geeks who like making bad jokes about their enthusiasms and collecting random information and stuff. It's delightful and everybody on it was spiffy and I just really want to be Ronnie Ancona when I grow up.

The other main geeky thing about today is that I have discovered the best local shop ever. It's maybe five minutes away from me by bus, and it's a second hand record shop in the front, then there's a bit with classic comics, and then it's a huge and rambly secondhand bookshop. It's one of those bookshops that really is magical; you go in and it goes on forever, with fantastical books heaped in piles and strange exciting worlds just waiting to be discovered behind every dusty bookcase. You can go up a tiny dark spiral staircase and find yet more books at the top, random books of the sort where you'll randomly pick one up and discover that it's your favourite childhood story you thought you'd made up because nobody else had ever heard of it. It's a perfect illustration of how wonderful bookshops can be, and it makes me want to drag all my friends there so we can explore and geek all day.

And because I am so cool, I have so far spent my Friday night dancing around my house in my black velvet dress, fishnets, and high heels. And now I've added my purple sparkly dressing gown. :D
