meeting the old friend

Met up with an old high school friend yesterday whom I haven't spoken to in years. The last time I saw her was in her father's funeral with her infant girl (whose birthday happened to fall on mine! yay!). Then she moved to Arizona. So imagine my surprise when I called her (thanks to the power of Friendster) and found out that she's in town and she's got another little girl! Both girls were delightfully adorable and I couldn't resist the younger one when she lumbered towards me with her arms outstretched.

We caught up on old times and talked about our new experiences during our non-communication period. There were moments when she would gaze out, deep in thought and I could tell right away that her mind was running through a list of what ifs. I'm not sad for her. I think she's got two wonderful daughters and a great husband. But I can tell, in the back of her mind, that she missed the good old days, when she can go out on a whim, when spontaneity was welcomed and taken for granted. I guess my presence was a memento of one of her what ifs. But, I'm happy that I can still relate to her and I'm getting inside info in the world of child rearing, incognito. The best advice are always dispensed unsolicited, unabbreviated, and candidly. It was nice to be told the truth for once without the spin and the pretense.
