catch-up

Our alley is getting repaved as I speak! It is good, because the alley is super pot-holey and wretched (especially for San Diego, where frost doesn't break up the pavement, making cracks and unevenness kind of normal). Apparently the sign on our parking stall that work would be starting at 7 am was not kidding! For the last twenty minutes I've had to listen to a lot of smashing and grinding, because my house mostly faces the alley. Good thing I don't sleep in, now, except sometimes on Fridays. But maybe they'll be done by Friday! A girl can hope, because this is SO ANNOYING.

The second part to annoying is that it was shitty enough to be parking our jeep on the street but now we have to park BOTH CARS on the street for at least ten days, so says the notice we received. Along with the other twenty people who just got booted from their spots, I have no idea how this is going to work. A side-street that used to be really good extra parking for this block has since been closed, to turn it into a parkade for the college across the street.

Did I mention? We got a new car. It is a 2008 Honda Fit. I guess we have had it for about a month.

It is a really good car. It has been getting over 35 mpg/14 kmpl with mixed city/highway driving ever since we got it, and that's awesome because I guess efficiency is supposed to rise after the engine is broken in so you're not expected to get the best mileage right off the lot. We are selling the Jeep to Greg's brother in Montana, since it's still good, we just can't afford it with the distance G has to commute to work (25 miles/40 km one way). Greg's parents really want us to sell the Jeep to Scott so I guess that's what we'll do. The only negative is that they won't come pick it up and drive it to him until early October, so we will have to keep moving it on the street until then. SIGH

I am sure glad I won't be staying home all day while all this pavement-smashing is going on. It's super loud and kind of hard to think with so much noise!

Yesterday we did such an old-person thing. We were planning on going to Wolf Parade, but at the last minute, couldn't rationalise the spending. With tickets and two drinks, we'd be paying $50 to see them, plus getting home super late, so G would be driving really far while groggy, and not able to do as well at his job, and I'd probably fall asleep on the bus/watching the baby. We're taking a trip up to coast to San Francisco and back in like 3 weeks, and we'll be using money we don't really have, so it's easy to justify staying home. I am kind of bummed because I did really want to go see them. This is the second time we've missed them in SD but we did the responsible thing. This trip will be expensive for us, but worth it.

We are going to go up the coast in increments; we'll take the 5 north of Hell-A and then hit the coast highway. We are going to go to Santa Barbara, probably stay in San Luis Obispo or Pismo Beach the first night. Then to Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Gregorio and then we'll stay somewhere at the south end of the SF Bay. Day three will involve a trip up to SF (probably) then back past Monterey inland, what we call Steinbeck Country, and back near San Luis Obispo again. Day four we will go home! I am really excited. We are bringing Buzz but the cats stay home.
