Chapter 3

Dave pulled in to Buzz' driveway right at the stroke of eight, like he'd said. Buzz shook his head as he headed out to greet his old friend. He remembered when getting Dave out of bed before noon had been a chore. But that was what being an adult did, he supposed. The boys were just about to head to the bus, and Buzz reminded them that he'd be home late. "There's leftovers in the fridge, should be enough for dinner, but if not, well, speed dial two, they'll put it on my tab," he said, and Tank nodded. He was used to looking after his brother Buck until the General got home from work, anyway. Thankfully by the time it was time for Tank to leave for college Buck would be old enough to look after himself...although he supposed Ripp would quit his job if it came down to it.

The boys headed to the bus, and Buzz and Dave got in Dave's car and headed to Sim Springs.

-----------------------------------------------

"You know, you do NOT look like the head of a security firm," Buzz said as they drove down the Road to Nowhere, headed to the highway. "In fact, you look just like you did in college."

"Yeah, I know. That would be one of the reasons I want you. *You* look like the head of a security firm. And you look nothing like you did in college, although your posture is still just as good."

"How did you put it when we first met? Like I had a ramrod shoved...."

"That was before I got to know you, and you have to admit, you *did* act like it."

"Yeah, I did. Still do...except when I'm hanging around you."

"Clearly you need to hang around me more, then."

"Then this job is a good thing, isn't it? And when, exactly, are you going to tell me what you want me doing?"

"When we get back to my office, probably this afternoon. All the stuff is there," Dave said, and Buzz rolled his eyes. "You couldn't have brought me stuff that I could read while we're traveling?"

"And miss catching up?"

"Point," Buzz said, "So, you still doing the flavor of the month thing?"

"Mostly, more like flavor of the year - I'm slowing down."

"Now that's a shame - it's like one of my fond college memories is corrupted forever."

"Gods, is that a joke?"

"Hey, I do have a sense of humor, if you'll remember," Buzz said, settling into his seat. This hybrid was comfortable. He could see himself with one of these.

"Oh, I remember you found one, eventually," Dave said, "You were wound *so* tight that first year."

Buzz just nodded, remembering. He'd been wound pretty tight since Lyla died, too...seemed easier to go back to that after she'd died. Seeing his old friend, though...it made him remember a time when things were different....
