I usually have something important to say on this date. A year ago, 25 loomed like a rain cloud, a slippery slope into my 30s that lead down the hill into a distance I could not quite make out. But now I'm oddly...at peace about it. Somehow something is quieted and muffled. I feel a muted wildness in it. Like adulthood has embraced me in the past few minutes and those fears of failure and future and forgotten dreams have flowed back into the stream of consciousness, no longer riptiding my thoughts away. The dance between little girl and woman have finally come together in a slow waltz, newness and sameness have embraced.
MIFF ended today. It was absolutely gorgeous outside, I almost felt bad for spending the afternoon indoors. I have to say it's been a pretty brilliant week pre-birthday. There is little that can make me happier than going to the theatre and it doubles when I can see a foreign and/or independent film. Usually I'm dragging people to come with because so many don't understand the subtle and sophisticated joy of entering new worlds and cultures totally unknown. Of reading subtitles and taking in luscious landscapes, watching mouths form foreign words and listening to the melodic cadence of their voal tones.
Four Minutes was as startling and brilliant as they described. The story was captivating, the actresses both gave strong performances, and the finale was something I will never forget. It was emotional and violent, liberating and entirely furious. It was as if she played all her soul and her talent and her body away -- freed it all. It reminded me of all the times where I lost myself in the moment and the world melted away and all that was was your art. Your body isn't your body and your fingers not your fingers and your heart not your heart. Just creativity and motion.
I highly recommend seeing it if you happen to find it near you.
