♘ CHARACTER INFORMATION
[ name ] Yakushi Kabuto
[ fandom ] Naruto
[ canon point ] Current manga (edit: current manga prior to chapter 487)
[ age ] 22
[ personality ] Ninjas are by nature secretive people. Kabuto, for various reasons, is more secretive than most. He holds what he cares about deep inside of him and almost nothing can bring his true personality to light. Perhaps it is because that personality is dangerous, or perhaps because it is anything but. Instead, the face he presents to the world changes based upon those around him - and he is quite apt at convincing himself that he truly believes what he is convincing others of. That is how complete the lie is. He has lived lies for so long that he has forgotten who - or what - is the real ‘him’. Instead he prefers the masks that others make for him. Who knows how these masks will develop in a place like Wonderland.
However, since his current master’s death, Kabuto has tried to be more independent. And while the temptation of becoming another faceless minion is strong, it is perhaps a blessing that he is of the independently minded Carnival crowd. It allows him to examine what he has found important in his past persona and construct a new one that gives him a bit more freedom. If he can keep his allegiances secret - a feat which surely will not be too unduly difficult for a man who has much practice with such things - Kabuto may be able to pretend to be the man he sometimes wishes he was. When not expected to be incompetent or a mere extension of Orochimaru, Kabuto seems to enjoy being a doctor. He enjoys the challenge of healing the sick, and finding out how people tick. He may occasionally be sadistic, but in general he finds that far more information can be gained from being helpful.
To the ninjas who may recognize him from the Naruto world, it will almost appear as if he has combined two of his personalities. It is clear that he is no longer the incompetent weakling of his Konoha years, but neither is he pretending to be Orochimaru’s sadistic right hand man. He will attempt to heal all, assuming they do not either declare their allegiances before him and force the potion into acting or threaten the position he has created for himself. He will seem to enjoy working for the Carnival, or serving at the Queens house, or doing what he can for the servants of the Mafia (though he in general avoids what he considers to be the Mafia’s obsessive and restrictive nature). Wonderland offers him a fresh start, and an escape from the expectations of his homeworld. He would rather not return to his violent homeword and will attempt to seem neutral in the Wonderland conflict, wishing not to destabilize the neutral (and therefore safe) position he wishes to build for himself.
[ history ] Kabuto has been a spy since a very young age. When he began working for Akatsuki is unknown, but he was adopted into Konoha at the approximate age of eleven, having been found on a battle field. His adoptive father was the leader of the undertaker squad and one of the best medical ninjas Konoha could offer. Kabuto apparently learned much from this man. However, he kept his talents hidden preferring to remain a completely average student so as to learn more about his classmates abilities and powers. When his cover was finally blown after his attempted assassination of Sasuke (though how much of that attack was truly an assassination attempt and how much of it was maneuvering to learn more of the Leaf Village’s loyalties is uncertain) he withdrew to become Orochimaru’s personal physician and main bodyguard.
Of course, his loyalty to Orochimaru has often been brought into question. He began serving the man under false pretenses - he was once another one of Daidaras brainwashed spies. But Orochimaru was able to break that enchantment, giving Kabuto at least one reason to remain loyal to the Snake Sannin. In his own worlds Orochimaru “won him over to his way of thinking”, though Kabuto has never seemed to be the most loyal of servants. Or rather, his loyalty is such that he feels confident in critiquing his master’s flaws and testing his restrictions. Perhaps it is this independent streak - coupled with the appearance of honest loyalty - that propelled Kabuto through the ranks of the Sound Village. Despite Kabuto’s contrary attitudes, Orochimaru honestly trusted Kabuto. That trust seemed to have been warranted - Kabuto offered his body as Orochimaru’s next vessel once and risked his life for the other man on several occasions. Yet Kabuto failed in his duty to protect Orochimaru. The Snake Sannin was defeated and absorbed by Sasuke, leaving Kabuto without a leader and stealing from him the man that gave him the only true home he’d ever had.
The result was an emotionally unstable healer seeking to fulfill his duty and revive his master in any way he could. That twisted, lonely logic resulted in the young man choosing to combine Orochimaru’s DNA with his own, a process by which the Snake Sannin’s powers were conferred upon Kabuto and the ninja began the process of becoming Orochimarus next ‘host’. However, Kabuto has no intention of loosing himself completely to the other man, and has resisted the loss of self ever since his ‘mistake’ in taking up his masters calling. The scars and scales that cover Kabuto’s left arm and face are markers of the struggle between the two ninjas while at the same time hinting at the joint power that Kabuto now wields. Yet, should he find himself in Wonderland, those powers would be stripped from him, and so to would the internal struggle for control.
[ appearance ] Kabuto is a tallish young man with grey hair and large round glasses. In general he is seen wearing a purple outfit composed of Capri shorts and a purple overshirt with a wide collar. He wears a t-shirt beneath this and has both a white belt and several extra side pouches where he stores kunai and the like. He keeps his hair tied back in a ponytail at the nape of his neck. He is slim and well muscled, but perhaps his most obvious features are the pale scale-like scars that cover roughly a third of his body. They are a constant reminder of his attempt not to lose himself to the other Sound Ninja. Upon entering Wonderland, the scars on his face and hands shrunk, allowing him momentary release from a struggle that has plagued him since Orochimaru’s death. While the scars still cover much of his body, he is now able to hide them much easier, no longer having to rely on full coverage or ninjitsu - which is a blessing as the latter he is no longer able to perform under the restrictions of Wonderland.
[ abilities ]
On his homeworld, Kabuto is a skilled healer and a strong ninja. He appears to have mastered a wide range of techniques; everything from being able to ‘puppet’ dead bodies to strong fighting techniques to various healing jitsus. He is particularly skilled with information gathering, an ability that does not require any special ‘powers’ but rather relies upon his innate intelligence and willingness to subjugate himself to the necessary roles. While not a tactical genius he does have some skill when it comes to running and maintaining organizations - his talent for administration can be seen from the fact that Orochimaru considered him his ‘right hand man’ even while Kabuto was maintaining a double life in Konoha. Like many healers, Kabuto has a wide range of skills that deal mostly with administration, healing, and support of other, stronger, combatants.
In Wonderland he will lose most of his skills and abilities with Ninjitsu yet, unlike many other ninja, those skills are not what define him as a person. While he can no longer heal wounds instantly or immediately recover from attacks, he still possesses the knowledge of the human body gained from several years of medical training and practice in the field. He is able to use the slight healing ability he has been left with too good use; once he gauges the extent to which his powers have weakened he should be able to still use those powers both as a defense and as a marketable skill. His abilities with administration and espionage have not been removed, though he is no longer able to use many of the ninjitsu that assist his more mundane abilities.

♗ SAMPLES
[ first person ]
Well, this is...interesting. A whole new world to explore? And a whole new war to fight in. One would almost think all an elaborate ruse, some trick or genjutsu created to make me doubt my sanity. Though if that were the case its creator must have been rather bored to waste all of this detail upon a simplistic creature such as myself. But no matter. This place seems real enough, even if I have difficulty believing it.
Would there be any here willing to help a new arrival - a foreigner in this strange land - learn his way around? I would be most appreciative of any assistance.
[ third person ]
“Who am I?” The ninja sat, thinking. It was a habit he had developed long ago, in an effort to balance his various acts. Whenever a new master appeared, or a new circumstance shook him to the core, the former Sound ninja would take a day to reflect on it, examining the changes it had worked on him both physically and emotionally, using that information to decide under which mask he should proceed. The mask of insanity had worked so far - yet the arrogant monster persona would not serve him well in this new environment. Here he was anonymous, no need to retreat behind such a confrontational visage. What should he be instead?
First, he examined the facts. He had been drawn here, enslaved to a new master, and forced to fight in a war he knew next to nothing about. However, the war had yet to begin, and in the mean time he was allowed to live his life freely. He had been stripped of his powers - but also some of their negative side effects, namely the ever present infestation of his former masters genes. That scar had faded through no act of his own after he had drunk the potion. Apparently the master of the Carnival intended for there to be no compeditors for Kabuto’s loyalty. This fact amused Kabuto, as it freed him to pick his loyalties even more. Still, he would like to meet his new master, this kind soul who had rescued a monster to fight in a monstrous war.
The ninja could nearly taste the sarcasm on his lips and mentally admonished himself. Such an attitude would not serve him well in a meeting with such a leader, no matter how tempting it was. Instead he chose a more appropriate mood to approach the problem with, a scientific one. He was eager to meet a master that thought he could command him with nothing more than a potion. Yet Kabuto was just as eager to explore this strange new world he had found himself in. Whether or not he would resist this ‘Carnival’ depended upon the other factions this land held. Mafia and Royalist…an interesting trinity the powers here made. Yet such opposing forces were hardly new to him. It would be interesting to see them play off each other, all revealing far more than they might wish in the ensuing conflict. Perhaps exploring the opposition first would be better than immediately bowing to his new master. Surly this world had something more to offer than physical war. His skills might be best put to use in another form…and it had been far too long since he had tested his talent at espionage.
