As I sat along the Singapore River taking in the sights and sounds while waiting for him to arrive, my heart was filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. Much as I tried to calm my nerves, I knew I was fighting a losing battle. I looked into the distance, attempting to relax myself, and began reflecting on how life sometimes has its little surprises round the corner. Over the past several months, I could only observe from a distance, and now, here I was psyching myself up for the reality of meeting up. In the midst of feeling jittery, there was also joy from having taken that leap of faith, to have made a connection, regardless of what the outcome might be.
All of a sudden, I felt something that snapped me out of my daze. It was my phone that had begun vibrating, an indication that a message had been received. As I went on to read the new message, my heart skipped a beat.
“I’m here... :) ”
“Let me take a deep breath before I go meet you :P ”
So began an evening of getting to know each other over potato wedges, cheese tofu, pasta, and desserts of cheesecake and a hazelnut pastry. As we shared experiences and thoughts on topics ranging from friends, past loves to dreams and life in general, I was impressed by how articulate he was. Considering we were meeting for the first time, he was also surprisingly open about certain aspects of his life, which I really appreciated. When the desserts arrived as we were chatting, we simply helped ourselves to the cheesecake and hazelnut pastry we had each ordered, a sign I took to mean that we were comfortable in each other’s company.
In the course of our conversation, I also noticed a quality of his which I had never picked up before. I realised that he was a person who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what he believed in. When he shared his stand on a certain issue, his conviction and strength of character shone through, which I must say, left quite an impression.
Full from dinner and dessert, we agreed to take a walk around the area. As we made our way towards Clarke Quay and the evening’s events began sinking in, I found myself unable to fathom why a person this eligible was still single.
“See. These are so cute.” *points to miniature beetle figures playing instruments on display*
“Well, if you buy four of them, they’ll form The Beatles.”
We subsequently ended up in Mox where the bustle and the loud music hindered conversation, and for a while, both of us just sat there staring into space. Needless to say, I wished the evening could have ended off better than what it was. Though I was hesitant about going to Mox, I didn’t voice my opinion as I wasn’t sure whether to raise my alternative suggestion to Mox or not. When he suggested calling it a day after we were done with our drinks, we headed home in separate cabs.
As the cab cruised along the expressway, a mish-mash of thoughts ran through my mind. The orange light from the street lamps, which periodically shined into the cab, seemed to constantly remind me to dispel any dark thoughts I had. There was also a silence in the air that weighed down heavily on me. While it may say nothing, the silence could also speak volumes.
