A good son: Stephen Colbert missed two tapings of his show, reportedly to care for his 91-year-old mother.
Stephen Colbert is taking time off to care for his ailing 91-year-old mother,
Lorna Colbert, according to several reports.
Late Wednesday night, the Comedy Central show was abruptly canceled for Wednesday and Thursday, leaving the channel to show reruns instead.
The cancellation shocked ticketholders, who were told in a brief email from Comedy Central that the show was canceled due to “unforseen circumstances.”
A source told the Daily News on Friday that Colbert could return as early as Monday’s taping. The show doesn’t tape on Fridays.
Sources confirmed to the Daily News on Thursday that Colbert had taken time off for a family emergency. His father and two of his brothers died in a plane accident in 1974.
The break comes at an awkward time for Colbert, who made much of his reputation on covering politics and election fever.
The “Daily Show” alum has not updated his Twitter feed or the show’s Twitter feed since Tuesday.
His absence was also not addressed by his mentor,
Jon Stewart, on the Daily Show Thursday night.
On Twitter, however, followers and fans expressed their concern for their favorite faux-conservative.
“Word has it Colbert’s 91 yo mother is ill. Good man for taking care of her, we’ll be here when you get back Stephen,” one user wrote.
“Colbert Report abruptly suspends production and I fall into a deep depression. Related?” “Good Wife” star
Josh Charles added.
EDIT: And to the person who commented on a news piece similar to this saying, "Colbert goes to care for his sick mother...I mean niece...I mean girlfriend..." You can rot in hell, asshole.
I tweeted at him a couple times, as I'm sure countless people have done. I hope everything turns out all right.
