Relay for Life

I joined the Walgreens team for this year's Relay for Life. Took place out at Princeton HS where we usurped the track & field area. I always thought that this was one of those events where you get people to donate a set amount per lap or mile completed. Apparently it's more a Support/Remember the People Who Have Cancer kind of thing where you make a donation up front, then hang out from 3 pm to 9 am. There are events throughout the day and people have booths set up where they hawk their wares for more donations.

Nobody told me I needed to bring a wad of cash. I figured since our team had its own bbq every year that we'd be taken care of for beverages. Not so. Not too big a deal as I had brought my own water which lasted about two hours, and then my friend that organized our store's involvement passed me a dollar for a bottle later on. So I was there just after 3 and began my long trek around the field. I'm pretty proud of the time I put in. I did eight miles, only stopping a few times. Once for the restroom, once to change from jeans to jogging shorts and again to take a 30 minute break after completing my 4th mile.

It was upon completion of my 8th mile, between 6:30 and 7:00, that I realized my team hadn't yet set up the grill. "We're waiting for some of the pharmacy people from whatever store it is," they said. I'm thinking, Well what about the people who've been here and walking since 3:00? I mean, hell, I've been burning off some serious energy, I need to eat something if I'm gonna keep going. No, we're waiting. So I bowed out at 8 miles in order to feed mah tumbly.

All in all, I'm pretty proud of the mileage and face time I put in. I stayed longer than the store manager. There were three people (one was another manager) who showed up to do two laps and then left for an arena football game. I lapped them twice. Whether or not I'm still with Walgreens next year, I think I'll do it again. I know that I need to bring cash for food, beverage and trinkets. I'll definitely get the bead necklace to keep track of mileage, have something to hang up afterward. Oh, I also need to bring sunscreen because, as we all know, I burn looking at pictures of the sun.
