Chapter 5

Cara knew she had to act quickly. If she didn’t get Kahlan from the water soon, she knew the cold would overtake her. She narrowed her vision and spotted an area ahead where she might be able to pull the Confessor from the water. She would only have one shot at this. She rushed ahead and scrambled out onto a dead tree that was lying sprawled across a portion of the river. She quickly hooked one arm around a branch to steady herself. She then stretched her other arm toward the place where she hoped the water would carry the brunette. Just as the whirling water looked as though it would carry Kahlan the opposite way it suddenly thrust her in Cara’s direction. The blonde could see that the other woman was struggling to keep her head up. She shoved her arm as far as it would go and with a mighty effort she grabbed the only thing her gloved fingers could find. It was the black leather of the Confessor’s traveling dress. She held on with all of her might and began to pull the other woman from the freezing water. Leather slipped on leather and for a moment she thought she might lose her grip, but stubborn determination won this battle. She wrenched the freezing cold woman from the swirling squall of water.

The blonde towed the lethargic form onto the riverbank where she collapsed to the ground, breathing heavily. “Kahlan… Kahlan,” was all she could force out. Her only answer was the sound of the raging waters behind them. She crawled to where the Confessor lay and quickly removed one of her gloves. She placed her fingers along the side of the brunette’s throat and was relieved to feel the pulsing under her touch. It was fast and erratic, but it was there nonetheless.

Replacing her glove, Cara rose to a kneeling position and scooped Kahlan into her arms. She carried the limp woman back to where they had stopped and eaten. Not surprisingly, Cara noted that the Mord’Sith were all gone. She gently laid the brunette down and began to quickly gather their belongings. She knew they couldn’t stay here but she also knew that she couldn’t carry the other woman for too long. She swung their packs onto her back and then proceeded to once again lift Kahlan from the ground.

She walked with her burdens until her legs could no longer take another step. She walked until her chest was so constricted she thought she could draw no more air. Cara knew the limits of her own body and knew that she would have to stop. Not only because she could no longer carry the Confessor but also because she knew the other woman needed to be warmed. She found a suitable area and began to make a fire. She had spread her bedroll on the ground and gently place Kahlan on it after removing her soaking wet clothes. She then took the Confessors bedding and draped it over the unconscious woman.

Once the fire was burning nicely, Cara stripped herself of her wet leathers and wrapped one of the spare blankets around herself. Then she sat down beside the prone body of the other woman. Her hand softly brushed back the dark curls surrounding the Confessor’s face. She placed a gentle kiss on her forehead before settling in beside her.

Almost a candle mark had passed before Kahlan awoke. When she opened her eyes she felt the warmth of the fire on one side and the warmth of a body on the other. She turned her head to see green eyes looking back at her. The look of worry was almost hidden on the blonde woman’s face, but Kahlan had noticed it. A sigh of relief and a sad, sweet smile were the only indications of emotion on the Mord’Sith’s features.

“I thought I was going to lose you,” Cara whispered softly.

“But you didn’t,” Kahlan whispered back, emotion threatening to choke her words. She was just about to reach for the Mord’Sith when the blonde abruptly rose from her place beside the Confessor.

“You should rest,” offered the blonde when she saw the look of disappointment on Kahlan’s face. “I’ll get you something to eat and then you can rest while I report to Lord Rahl in the journey book. He needs to know what happened.” She thought she saw a faint scowl as she said the words.

It didn’t take Cara very long to make sure the Mother Confessor had eaten. When she was sure the dark haired woman would continue to rest she took the journey book from her pack. She chose a spot not too far from Kahlan. She sat in the shadow of a large oak tree with her back pressed against its rough bark as she prepared to write in the book. And then…

The quill and journey book dropped to the ground beside them as Kahlan’s lips pressed into hers. It was slow at first, passionate and gentle. Tentative. But as the fire spread through their bodies, so did the urgency of their kisses. Swollen lips danced together frantically as tongues sought to explore their very souls.

Kahlan moved to kneel in front of Cara, who still sat against the tree. Her hands found their rightful place on either side of Cara’s face. Ungloved hands reached around her back and pulled her closer.

Cara’s lips parted and Kahlan wasted no time plunging her tongue deeply, as she caught the moan from the blonde’s throat. Kahlan’s hands slipped into golden tendrils and held them desperately as their kisses intensified.

Their hands began to caress each other, slowly but then giving way to passion they became much more daring. Before either of them realized it fingers stroked naked skin and they were quickly careening out of control.

“Mmm… you feel so good,” Kahlan whispered as the heat devoured her entire body. She moaned as Cara’s lips overtook hers again.

Blankets slid away in a flurry of tangling limbs. As they found themselves exposed to their own vulnerabilities, their weaknesses, their lips once again swayed to an unseen melody. When the kiss broke they stared deeply into each other’s eyes.

Kahlan had never seen a more beautiful expression than the one Cara now wore. She knew she could just melt into those jade eyes forever. But then the blonde glanced away for a split second and when her gaze returned, there was a hint of mischief which accompanied a raised eyebrow.

Cara gently grabbed the Confessor by the shoulders and laid her down on the soft bed of moss that covered the shadowy ground at the base of the oak. With a playful smirk, she reached for something and then instructed the Confessor to close her eyes. Kahlan gave her a confused look tinged with a hint of apprehension.

“Trust me… please.” Cara placed a gentle kiss on her cheek and though it was lighter than a whisper, Kahlan could feel the heat ignite low in her belly. She studied Cara’s face and then she submitted and closed her eyes.

As she lay there in the darkness it seemed like hours. Agonizing moments passed and Kahlan was about to open her eyes to see if the blonde had taken the opportunity to flee when she felt a tickling sensation on her neck. She resisted the urge to open her eyes as she felt the light caresses.

The sensation trailed across her right cheek and then her left. So gentle. Then it moved seductively across her lips. The light touch was soon replaced by warm, full lips. Then the silky sensation began a trek down her neck and between her breasts followed by soft kisses at every interlude. Kahlan stifled a moan as she felt the strokes curve under her left breast. But when she felt the light touch encircle her hardened nipple she gasped. Darkened blue eyes flew open and she saw equally hooded emerald eyes and the most contented smirk surrounded by a flowing blonde mane.

“Cara,” she whispered as she watched the blonde take the feathery end of the quill and twirl it skillfully around her other nipple, causing her head to fall back and her hips to arch upward. The flames that tore through her body nearly consumed Kahlan. Cara resumed her taunting as the plume made its way across the firm muscles of the brunette’s stomach causing them to twitch uncontrollably.

“Oh…,” she moaned in a low sultry voice, totally unprepared for the sensation of arousal and emotion gripping her.

When Cara had finished her trail of kisses and licks that followed the quill’s erotic designs, she let the feathery ends glide smoothly along one, and then the other of Kahlan’s thighs. She met shadowy blue eyes with a challenging look and then slowly traced a pattern higher.

The moan Kahlan elicited made the blonde moan as well. The wandering plume was quickly replaced by Cara’s lips, which caused a whole new series of moans. As Cara’s tongue languidly explored what Kahlan offered, her hands came to rest on the brunette’s hips. In the far corners of her mind she could hear the Mord’Sith protest, but the woman in her had taken over. She would not stop, not when the person who had evoked so many emotions in her was lying exposed in front of her. Not when she could have been lost forever.

The sweet moans of that woman quelled any further doubts and Cara lifted her head to look into the depths of those beautiful sapphire eyes as she gently slid two fingers into the brunette’s slick core.

Kahlan’s hips bucked into the sensation as passion overtook her entire body. “Oh… Cara…,” she whimpered as she desperately moved to the pace the blonde set.

The rhythm began leisurely at first, but as Cara’s thrusts deepened the two danced in perfect harmony as the tempo quickened. A thumb brushed Kahlan’s aching clit in a gentle, circular motion causing the brunette’s back to arch again. Cara’s own arousal almost overtook her at the sight of the writhing Confessor beneath her.

Panic threatened to overtake pleasure as Kahlan fought to control the swirling magic within. She tried to put words to her fears, but just as the words were formed on her lips, the blonde curled her fingers and brought the Confessor to her shuddering release.

Her own name was the only sound Cara heard before the thunderous wall of magic hit her forcefully. Her chest tightened and her breath came only in short pants. She watched the Confessor’s ominous black eyes as they began to fade back to their original pale blue. And then time seemed to stop as she saw the horrified look coming from those beautiful orbs.

“Oh spirits…no,” Kahlan cried as she saw Cara’s pained expression. “Cara, what have I done?” She wailed in despair as she cupped the blonde’s face in her hands. She watched as the Mord’Sith’s face became painted with pure adoration and serenity. It would have been magnificent had Kahlan not known it had been caused by the power of her confession.

Then Cara grinned and lifted an eyebrow at the Confessor. “If you’ve forgotten so soon, perhaps I should show you again.”

Before Cara could blink an eye, warm arms enveloped her and she was being kissed fiercely. “Cara… you’re not… How? Oh, thank the Creator.”

The blonde just shrugged and rolled onto her back beside Kahlan. The pair lay there silently staring at the stars for a long time. Then cautiously Cara slid her arm under the brunette’s neck and pulled her closer. Kahlan grabbed the nearby bedroll and covered them both as she turned to lay her head on the blonde’s shoulder. They both fell asleep, with peaceful smiles on their faces, listening to the melody of the crickets’ song.
