He sees her and can’t help but grin. He hopes no one saw him. He is not supposed to smile because none of this is funny. But then again it is.
He glances at her again. Her tanned skin, her black hair, her unique eyes…
He glances at her graceful arms while she is driving.
They are in the middle of nowhere. They know where to go but how to get there; is fuzzy.
She seems determined, her pursed lips are indicative of that and they tempt him.
He wished he could make her scream just to see those lips part.
But all his powers are gone and that makes him furious. His telekinesis, his super-hearing, his molecule manipulation… They are all gone and that he is left with is himself. Just his plain, dull, old self. Something he detests. It seems like he is back to zero, back to insignificance. And he hates that.
Nothing means more to him than being special. And being just an ordinary guy right now, with no powers and no one to fear him was unthinkable, unbearable.
He would take his own life, he could take his own life now. But the only thing keeping him from that is hope and the desperate need, the hunger to get back what was once his!
It was by pure lack that he found Maya and her brother. At least that was what he thought at first, but now he thinks it was fate. Destiny. And he was going to go through with his, once he forced Mohinder Suresh t undo what had happened to him.
He realizes she asked him something and his attention shifts on her again.
“I’m sorry! What did you say?” He sees her glance on the mirror, set on him.
“I asked if you are ok. I know the heat must be unbearable to you!”
He laughs inside at the hint of genuine concern in her voice.
“I will be fine as soon as we get to Dr Suresh. Don’t you think about me! We have more important things to worry about!” He mutters, exaggerating his pain and exhaustion.
“Ok!” she says and he knows that if he had his super-hearing, he would be able to hear her heartbeat grow faster, deeper, stronger.
God, she was so easy to manipulate. She was so consumed with fear and guilt that she was oblivious to what was taking place around her.
Too consumed with fear for what she was. Afraid of the monster she was. A graceful monster, he concluded.
Too consumed with guilt over the things she had done. The things the monster within her had done. Mostly unwillingly. But once -he thought to himself, content- on her own free will.
Sure, he had given her a little nudge, but that was all it took. And she had followed his advice. Done his bidding.
Looking at him in awe, trusting. Trusting unto him, her life along with her brother’s.
Her trust, her obedience, her surrender was almost intoxicating. It was only a shadow of the awe he could see in the eyes of the ones he had killed -as they realized he was superior, just better-but it was there, nonetheless.
Unmistakable, undeniable. Almost touching. That is if anything like that could touch him.
That is if he could feel anything like that. But he couldn’t, not now, not anymore. And he would make sure that that remained the case in the future as well. Nothing should be able to touch him.
Alejandro was staring at him through the mirror on the right side of the car, the silent chuckle suspicious to him.
But Sylar was better than him, he could beat him at his own game. He was quick to turn the chuckle and the grin into a grimace of pain and moaning. Alejandro kept looking at him but it was fine so long as Maya was blissfully driving oblivious to the masquerade.. Ignorant, blinded, unknowing, uncomprehending, innocent… Just the way he liked her.
His eyes set on her neck and then the back of her head and it was addictive. He remembered the things he had done. The things he wanted to do, the things he would do, when Suresh fixed this. Fixed him.
He let his mind travel. It’d been a long time since he had last found anyone so trusting, so gullible. And attractive to go with it.
Pretty and dumb was the ideal combination. He realized that now. It was convenient, easy and most importantly it was fun.
Poor little girl with the abyss in her eyes.
Didn’t you know that when you stare into the abyss, the abyss looks back at you?
She had only caught a glimpse of the abyss, the darkness within her and already she was frightened, petrified, unappreciative.
He never did that mistake. The darkness in him, was a solid part of him.
A gift. Something that satisfied him, that fascinated him.
He had stared into the abyss in him and he hadn’t flinched or blinked. He wasn’t afraid.
If anyone or anything should be afraid, it was the abyss itself.
Because he would become even darker than it. Even more infinite, more profound and more inescapable.
One he wanted to become like the sun. Bright, burning, life-giving.
He wanted to be brighter than the sun… But now he wanted to become exactly the opposite. Dark, freezing, life-taking.. The opposite of the sun. A Dark sun! Consuming and eating up everything. Everything he could take. Everything he could contain.
Oh, yes, inescapable! Terror would not cover it.
He was going to be fierce and fearsome. No one would be his match in power or influence.
He was going to be just like God. A dark, dusky God. As black as night, as black as hell!
He was going to control everyone and everything. His life, their lives. Life in general.
Oh, yes! He was going to be the ruler of everything.
It wouldn’t be long now.
Suresh was near. They were getting closer, he could feel it.
Soon he would be able to play God.
Play with everything and everyone.
But till then, Maya would suffice, she would have to suffice.
After all, she was a shiny new toy and she was all his…
