that the teddy bear have their picccccccnic...
seriously, though, today I'm not only going to do a song by song mega review of Quad but also
scales has challenged me to do this...
Comment on this post and I'll give you a band. Don't worry, I'll make it one you know and love. You put your ten favourite songs by that band on your LJ and challenge others to do the same.
for Iceman so here I go
1. Strike Back of Phyco
For the three years that I've known of and appreciated the Iceman song 'Phyco' has allways been my firm favorite. This song has some of Dai-chan's strongest compostion behind it and the wonderful mix of the more classical edge of the piano with the harder beat of the synth is a unique thing that I find utterly compelling.
2. Lost Complex
Those that have been with me for a while will know that I credit 'Complex' for begining my journey into Iceman addiction. Again it's the stregth of the composition, that wonderful blend of piano and synth, as well as the hook of the engerish chorus that make this song so wonderfuly compelling.
3. Perfect future
This song has been growing on me in the best of ways in the past few months. The strong vocal from Rin makes an almost mundane track sore and the backing track of Kenichi's unique guitar makes it perfection!
4. Wish Matrix
For me this song is about Dai-chan. The twisted, discordent, melody of his voice as he sings the chorus simply intensifies the edge of desperate longing contained within the lyrics of this song. Also the 'unique' sound his meddling pulls out of Kenichi's guitar gives it that heavy base sound that hits all of my musical buttons!
5. Mr d.
Technically it's a Kito song but, as he first released it with Iceman, I'm sure I'll be forgiven! As with all of Kenichi's stuff there's so many hooks and little musical tricks in this piece to count...my two personal favorites have to be that silly, silly, chorus and the bit somewhere near the end where he paces the whole thing down slightly.
6. Tearless
I make no secret of my addoration of Rin's vocal and thus my love for this song should be of no surprise to anyone who's heard it at least once! The emmotions thick within the melody carry so very well in Rin's voice and there's the occational hint of that slight melodic waver that would become his signature once he left the band. Also I have a terrible soft spot for Iceman ballads as they allways seem to feature a blending of the three members unique singing style that works so very well for me.
7. Caution!
Caution is, again, a heavily Dai-chan influenced piece and features all of the 'signature' Dai-chan musical tricks. Again the vocorder makes this song what it is, though the 'synthed' edge in the Rin vocal for this song helps enhanse the almost trance like feel to the music.
8. Final Prayer
I think it's the backing track that makes this one for me...the little pauses in the melody as well as that twisting synth sound make it bouncy and feel good. Gains a life of it's own (as with most of Iceman's songs) in live concert where the bounce factor gets pushed up to 11 by Dai-chan's enthused keytar playing!
9. Breathless night slider
Breathless holds the unique honnour of being one of the only Iceman tracks to feature a guitarist other than Kenichi and this gives it a more 'mainstream' edge that is both highly compelling and a little strange. As with most of the early Iceman music there's moments of sparkling perfection and moments where you could be listening to almost any other J-rock song. Predicatably, the wining feature for me is the vocal...Rin sings with a strength and a confidence that carries the melody and makes it memorable.
10 Nartic boy
Again it's Rin's vocal that makes this song one of my favorites, most especialy the little sigh contained somewhere near the end of the song.
ugh I repeted myself about 20 billon (exageration) times and I've probibaly come across like the sad little Otaku that I am but at least I tried right?
expect the super duper Quad review at about 2ish.
