Hello Kitty #01: McDonald’s

I love McDonalds, I do. I’m a child of the 80s, so it’s nostalgic for me and the shiny never wore off. Maybe it’s because I’ve only been to a McDonalds a handful of times in my life when I was very, very young because by the time I was 7 my mother had married my awful, abusive stepfather who thought my sister and I didn’t deserve anything - anything - and that included going out to eat. Even when we were in our early teens we never went, because we were supposed to go to school or church then come straight home and go into our room. It was more or less house arrest all the time, for no real reason. I think that’s part of the reason why Laota and I delight in such childish things now, because we’ll spend the rest of our lives trying to have a childhood without really knowing how.

Then, when I was 13, we moved to Missouri and a middle-of-nowhere town that only had a Pizza Hut, which was out by the highway and closed within a year of us being there. Seventeen years later and just the act of going to McDonalds is a treat for me, I even like the awful food. I’ve been about 3 times since my step dad died in 2006, and all of those times required a kind person to give me a ride 50 miles to the nearest town with franchises.

So we’ve established that I love things that little kids love, which is why when Laota and I found out through a random Google Images search that McDonald’s had Hello Kitty toys in their happy meals, we hit the roof. There is no end to the love of Hello Kitty at my house. We love her so much that when Super Cute, the Hello Kitty balloon, debuted in the Macy’s parade a couple of years ago she instantly became the balloon we watch for the entire parade from that year on.

So, last night after shopping for the ‘rents Christmas, we used the ride we’d gotten to swing by the ever-busy McDonald’s and grabbed a couple of Happy Meals - and voila, Hello Kitty making snow angels!

And yes that IS a sticker pack on the back!
