So overjoyed, I can’t even explain it to you - as I’m sure you’ve heard by now, what with all the screaming and jumping around, New York’s gay and lesbian couples now have the same rights as straight couples - well, at least when it comes to getting hitched. That’s right! New York State has legalized gay marriage!
It’s ridiculous that this is such a victory, but it is. Really, this should just be handed to gay couples when they’re born - no disgusted faces, no fake moral dilemma - just give people equal rights and shut up about it. Here’s some stuff from NY Daily News:
New York made history last night as the State Senate voted “aye” on gay marriage.
Senators passed the bill 33 to 29 as the normally somnolent chambers erupted in a raucous chant of “USA! USA!”
“As I have said many times, this is a very difficult issue and it will be a vote of conscience for every member of the Senate,” said GOP Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Nassau).
New York joined Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa and Washington, D.C., in legally recognizing gay marriage.
“I’m verklempt,” said a nervously optimistic Assemblyman Matthew Titone (D-S.I), one of five openly gay state lawmakers prior to the vote. “I’m still in a state of disbelief.
I’m verklempt, too, damn it! It’s overwhelming, it’s touching and it’s about time. Well done, NY! If you repeal or veto this, I will probably kill you. No pressure!
