CW Upfronts

I just got back from the CW Upfronts. I always like to go to those each year. The highlight of the event at Lincoln Center, for me, was Maroon 5 performing before the big presentation. They put on a great show and I basically got to stand right up front and see everything without fighting a bunch of crazed, screaming fans.

The line-up for the network next year looks solid (by CW standards). They are able to keep a lot of their line-up that is working this year -- Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill on Monday; America's Next Top Model on Wednesday; Smallville and Supernatural on Thursdays -- intact for next year. They are adding in the new 90210 -- with a promising cast plus previous cast members coming in for cameos -- and moving Everybody Hates Chris and The Game to Friday (followed by a second play of ANTM) to try to be more competitive there. As has also been announced, they are selling off Sunday nights to be programmed by other entities (which they didn't talk about).

The second highlight of my night was talking to Dustin Milligan, who is now in the new 90210, but most recently was in the Supernatural "Ghostfacers" episode as the beloved "Alan. J. Corbett". To say this guy is cool and adorable is an understatement. His enthusiasm when talking about working on SPN was great and his love for the character, Corbett, was endearing. He is excited about 90210 and I am really looking forward to checking him out on it in the fall. I hope that others give this show a shot (if only to support Dustin). Honestly, he should have been cast as the long lost Winchester cousin or something (lol), but I'll check him out in 90210. Another popular guy of the night was Penn Badgley from Gossip Girl. The poor guy could barely get out of the room with all of the women crowding around him for photo ops and chit chat. Chace Crawford, another Gossip Girl fave, was smart and fast enough to get out of the corner and keep moving. He and Blake Lively moved around a bit and even talked to Dawn Ostroff and posed for photo ops. The OTH gang (minus the two top guys) were there, but stayed safely ensconced behind the velvet rope.

There were some talent there from various shows, but none from Smallville or SPN (darn!). Since there will be no more Lex Luthor (and maybe no more Chloe) on SV, I really didn't care there, but I sure wish one of the SPN boys could have made it -- or Kripke or Edlund or Gamble. Oh well.

The other 2 new shows, Surviving the Filthy Rich, and the reality show, Stylistas, were also announced. I think the lead actress of Surviving the Filthy Rich looks appealing, but I wonder how much of the antics of the "filthy rich" I will be able to stand next year -- especially on one network. Between Gossip Girl, 90210 and Surviving the Filthy Rich, I may be "monied" out. I'm already into Gossip and will next take on 90210 (nostaglia + Dustin, lol) -- I don't know how much more I can take. I will say that Surviving... looks like it has more heart that the other "richinista" shows, so it may have that going for it.

Anyway, the CW will always have me at Supernatural, so.... I did get a moment to talk to Dawn Ostroff and told her thank you for sticking with Supernatural and realizing that women like sci-fi and action, too. Now I don't know if she actually knows that women like sci-fi and action, but it was my way of saying it and thanking her if she actually does know that.

If I get to see some more clips on the new shows, then I will pass more opinions along...

Until then, this is cali5, your "industrygeekgal" signing off... "xo xo"

upfronts, cw
