secret agents!au. in which nichkhun is far too smooth and adorable for his own good, and victoria is not amused
-
victoria stretches, bending down to her toes and folding back her arms before sending the report to jinki to proofread. she had spent the last four hours analysing blood samples and fingerprints, compiling enough evidence to convict three criminals for life.
victoria thinks she's earnt herself a break.
she's about to make herself a pot of green tea, when there's distinct crash and foreign swearing outside her cramped office. victoria freezes, before snatching the nunchucks she keeps by her table and readying herself to attack.
"who's there?" she calls out, her korean slurred and stilted when she was nervous. "i swear to god, if you don't come out right now i'm going to cut you up and send the pieces to your mother!"
the doorknob rattles, and victoria has it all planned out (she's going to smash the nunchucks on their head, grab their wallet and run for it), before nichkhun's head pops in, a bashful, apologetic expression on his face.
"sorry, i - uh - tripped, and all those files minho told me to bring down fell and - and it must have made a huge noise and uh - sorry i scared you" he stammers, ear going bright red.
victoria lowers her weapon sheepishly, inwardly cringing at how terrified she had made the new profiler.
"oh"
nichkhun stumbles in, his arms filled with paperwork kyuhyun and minho no doubtedly sent down just to piss her off. he falters, scanning the messy area.
"uh - where do i put these?" he furrows his thick brows, his impossibly large eyes blinking up at her.
victoria coughs, laughing nervously. she pushes aside a couple microscopes and last year's files and gestures vaguely.
"somewhere there will be fine" she says airily, hoping he wouldn't notice how red she was going.
nichkhun flashes a megawatt smile at hers, his eyes crinkling at the corners, and victoria wonders if the board of directors only hired good-looking men.
"this place is - uh - nice" nichkhun ventures, studiously ignoring the dead body half-hanging out of its tray as he places the files down.
victoria chuckles, quickly striding over and pushing the corpse back into the morgue before turning to face the profiler.
"you don't have to lie, really. considering this is your first time down at the lab, i'm surprised you haven't run away screaming yet" she says conversationally.
nichkhun shrugs.
"you learn to ignore the obvious things when you want to find out the little details" he smiles again, and victoria is distinctly aware of her thudding heartbeat.
"l-like what?" she inwardly berates herself for stuttering.
nichkhun shrugs again, before gesturing around the room, his eyes flicking over her things in a quick, decisive manner, cataloguing everything.
"like the way you organise your work. it's messy, but there's an order to it, indicating that you try to hide how much you care about things. there's also those funny little trinkets shoved in the corner of your desk - you regret the things you do when you're impulsive. and you have a pororo mug; you're a little childish and immature, enough for you to indulge in a little whimsy, but you'd hate anything that's too excessively...stupid"
nichkhun says this all in a gentle, matter-of-fact tone that doesn't belittle her or make her ashamed of who she is, and victoria can feel a little bit of awe seep into the already growing curiosity for the blonde-haired man.
"wow," she breathes, the corner of her lips quirking upwards. "i don't know if that's brilliant or downright creepy"
nichkhun laughs, his eyes crinkling adorably.
"occupational hazard" he winks, and victoria thinks that might be his secret weapon or something because it makes her heart seize up in this odd ache and forget everything else and oh god - that was how he got the job in the first place, wasn't it?
"you're also prone to daydreaming," he points at her furrowed brow. "your face gives away everything"
victoria rolls her eyes
"i work with dead bodies all day long with nothing to entertain me other than taecyeon's twenty-page charts. it's an occupational hazard" she shoots back, smirking slightly at the surprise on nichkhun's face (she bets he's filing away her reaction - can be quite feisty when pushed; defensive, protective, kind of hot).
he recovers quite well, shooting her another disarming smile that annoys her and makes her heart flutter. victoria places her hands on her hips, squinting at him as if trying to figure out why on earth he's trying to distract her from the three dead bodies she has to examine today.
"what else can you tell?" she blurts out before she can stop herself, inwardly cringing at her lack of a mental filter.
nichkhun chuckles, before taking a step closer. he's close - close enough for victoria to feel his warmth and see the freckle on his collarbone.
"i can also tell," his voice is suddenly low, a deep husky tone that lights her entire body on fire. "that if i'd ask you out for coffee right now, you're probably say yes"
victoria takes her gaze away from the bare skin at the hollow of his throat to look at him straight in the eyes. it's part-curious, part-who the hell do you think you are?, before she smiles, lips curving and eyes crinkling and for a moment, nichkhun is the one with butterflies.
"if you had said tea, i probably would've"
