Nobody really wants them together.
--
Nobody really wants them together.
That's what Ga In tells herself as Kwon smiles warmly at her, threading his fingers through hers. It's all part of their image, this cute, adorable, quirky non-couple that the nation loves.
Ga In is sure that if she and Kwon were to really start dating, the entire 2ONEday fanclub would be screaming for her blood.
So she ignores the way her heart flutters uncontrollably every time Kwon does something extravagant and romantic (which, what with producers wanting higher ratings, has become quite often), pretends she doesn't like how he always declares noona, you're mine every time she wears revealing outfits, and she really does hate the way Kwon wakes her up by playing piano.
Ga In reminds herself that it's all for the cameras, that Kwon really isn't as shy and awkward and quirky and adorable as the image he puts out.
(But, the thing is, he is.)
He says those things (noona, I love you), does those things (do you think I should propose to her at Jinyoung-hyung's concert?), feels those things (I was so nervous because of you, noona!) because he wants to.
Kwon holds her hand and leans against her shoulder and makes her laugh and it makes her feel everything that she shouldn't because this isn't supposed to be real.
(But the thing is, it is.)
It's funny how much she knows about him. They don't have much time to talk (in between pretending to be married and in love) but the quiet conversations they have at 2am (oh, the irony) are the ones that etch their way into her heart.
Ga In knows how much Kwon wants to be a good, respected singer, how he hates how fickle and nasty netizens could be (what with driving his best friend out of the country), and the fact that he kind of hates the way people treat him like he's some flamboyant comedian, all the time.
Ga In remembers the way his eyes well up in frustration.
"It's all about the image, isn't it noona?" he asks angrily, as if he wants her to shake her head, say no, Kwonnie, don't give up, and fight, for this - them.
(But Ga In's never been a good liar.)
So she takes a deep, shuddering breath (I'm sorry, I want this too, maybe in the future, I love you), before saying,
"Yeah, pretty much"
Kwon looks at her, like he was hoping - expecting so much more even when he couldn’t - shouldn’t (I'm sorry too, noona, please wait for me, I love you) before turning back to his script, a stoic expression on his usually bright face.
Ga In feels her chest ache, like someone’s reached in and squeezed her heart. But she looks at her script (Kwon and her holding hands, Kwon and her laughing, Kwon and her being in love) and reminds herself that it’s not real, that it won’t ever actually happen, that nobody really wants them together, after all.
(But the thing is, she does.)
