Last night my friend ML pointed out that the resistance against the proposed changes to last call are a bit silly, and I couldn't agree more. I found it particularly funny to read the FB group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=63412595160&ref=nf) who now boast over 2000 member, especially the information posted by the groups moderator/creator, including the following gem:

"St. John’s vibrant nightlife scene, with its late serving hours, are a reflection of the progressive people living in this city and should not be changed. "

I don't mean to slag anyone who is in support of this movement to keep bars open later, but I feel as though to consider this movement a sign of a progressive group or society is a bit of a stretch.

Why do bars need to stay open later exactly? Why can't people go out earlier and come home earlier?

My main beef with this whole thing stems from the issue is that this isn't an issue. Our government are a bunch of backward pricks who are trying to impose massively stupid laws on our media (including fines for downloaders), our environment is literally in peril, the cost of food and oil are posing major problems globally (while oil companies are boasting record sales), etc etc etc, and yet people are impassioned enough to pick the right to stay out later as *the* issue for them to move forward on and mobilize over 2000 others to voice their concerns on? I can't help but wonder if this should be considered a legitimate cause or issue. Also, legitimate causes and concerns are seemingly ignored but yet 2000+ are quick to jump on the bandwagon to defend their right to party.

Would an earlier last call really pose that many problems to people's everyday lives? Feel free to comment because I'd like to hear why this should be an issue anyone gives a shit about.
