Glossary of terms used in Iron Hold shorts. (Link to FAEQ)


the big man - (all) Ascalain
the bitch - (all) Nebeshanin
our boy prince, the boy prince - (all) Arathalian
butlering - (Special Issue) Watch duty in a fae's antechamber. Comes from necessity of opening and closing the door for researchers all day.
Buttons - (all) Fiannas
Cally - (all) Cochalyon
Cully - (all) Culundar
from Cally to Cully - (Special Issue) a full sweep in a hallway patrol; (all) thoroughly, completely
demeanour - (all) The phrase 'she's got demeanour' means a fae is severely out of sorts, unhelpful or dangerous. Comes from the Observation of Fae Demeanour report sheet filled out hourly by cell custodians.
faebait - (Special Issue) researchers
fae fever - (Special Issue) New employees or visitors who exhibit fear of the fae are said to have 'fae fever'. A joke on sweats and anxious nausea.
Hold-rat - (fae) derogatory name for an employee of the Hold
Interim Query (researchers) - the first interview with a fae on a given subject/project
ironblood - (fae) derogatory term for a human being
his Majesty - (all) Arathalian
man of iron - (fae) Talton Army soldier; slightly archaic now, only used ironically
misfire - (all) A violent explosion of magic, usually in magic gone wrong.
you Nasskissy, you Nassy - (Special Issue) idiot, moron. Comes from the fae născîssè, meaning 'ironblood'.
Nebs, her Nebs, her Nibs - (all) Nebeshanin
nesters - (Special Issue) protestors
new blood - (all) A new or junior employee of the Iron Hold.
paley - (all) An employee of the Hold who works in the underground levels, especially a researcher. Comes from sun-starved complexions of long-time workers.
pinned - (all) Term for a fae whose magic has been neutralised by 'pins', very small iron needles inserted under the skin, as in the phrase "go on in, he's pinned"; also used by researchers to indicate a state of frustration or inability to help, ie. "Sorry, I'm pinned too; try asking admin."
Query - (researchers) an interview session with the fae
the Seven - (all) the Seven of the Hold, the Iron Hold's seven remaining inmates: Ascalain, Fiannas, Ilinme, Arathalian, Culundar, Nebeshanin and Cochalyon
the Specials - (all) The Special Issue of the Talton Army, a highly trained specialist countermagic force. In modern times, mostly employed in anti-Faeborn activities and the staffing of the Iron Hold.
the spring screaming - (all) Early spring period during which Cochalyon annually pulls out his regrowing wings for reasons unknown. Play on 'spring cleaning'.
Squeaker - (Special Issue) Cochalyon
Sunshine - (all) Ilinme
the top-heavies - (Special Issue) high-ranking officers OR the Iron Hold Administration
the Temporaries, the Temps - (all) The cells on the first and second underground levels of the Hold (the bottommost is Holding Floor C, where the Seven are). So called because inmates held here were never kept long-term; the wellspring of the Iron Hold reaches only the lowest floor.
Tiny - (Special Issue) Ascalain
topside - (all) outside the Hold (or the aboveground levels); when applied to people, same as 'topsider'
topsider - (all) an employee of the Hold who works aboveground; also used by Special Issue to mean 'a civilian'
the Voice - (all) Cochalyon
