Chibi Valentine

The Doctor was bent over, studying the open book in front of him.  Fingers splayed outward on the counter for balance as he leaned forward, glasses hanging precariously at the end of his nose, eyes moving back and forth following the words written across the page.

"Mmhm," he muttered a few times and nodded as if in agreement before standing to his full height.  He shrugged his shoulders a few times, rolled his head around as if working out the neck muscles and then stared pensively off into space.

"Right-o," he announced abruptly and addressed the small crowd peering back at him as he picked up the large volume and gave it a toss onto the kitchen table.  It landed with a loud thump and the chibis jumped at the sound, never taking their eyes off the Doctor.

He pulled his glasses off with one hand and bent down until he was eye-level with the waiting group.  A gleam in his eye and his I'm-so-brilliant grin was met with wide-eyed consternation.  "We're going to put together--well, cook--er, rather bake, yes that's it.  We're going to bake a cake for Rose," he stated delightedly as looks of shock and disbelief flickered over the other's faces followed by a quiet meep.

"Of course I know what I'm doing," he replied, sounding a bit hurt, and turned hurriedly towards the book now lying on the table.  He flipped a few pages, then pointed at the picture displayed.  It was the photo of a large red, heart-shaped cake complete with frosted swoops and swirls along the edges, and a miniature wreath of roses surrounding a small cupid figurine carved from chocolate at its centre.  "That's the one," he proclaimed and held his hands up as if to ward off the tirade of meeps that followed.

"We've got all the ingredients here in the kitchen, and with everyone helping we can be finished in a couple of hours.  It'll be a piece of cake," he coaxed ignoring the groans at his play on words.  He glanced around as if to confirm his statement noting only a few heads were nodding in agreement.  "C'mon, Rose is shopping with Jackie; that gives us at least four hours.  And I've already procured forty-two flavours of ice cream to go with."  At his final words the kitchen became a blur of activity and the Doctor grinned to himself.  Bribery works every time.

It was soon evident the Doctor hadn't spent much time in the kitchen lately other than to put on tea.  Chibi!Rose looked at him questioningly after his fifth attempt in trying to locate the large mixer.  He closed the cupboard with deliberate slowness and returned her look with a little shrug of his shoulders.  "Rose rearranged again, yeah?"  Chibi!Rose nodded and the Doctor sprinted for the door.

He caught himself with a hand on the door frame, his body lurching from the sudden stop of momentum, and he turned back, wearing his most serious face.  "Don't move," he growled menacingly before disappearing.

There was less than a moment's silence before a whispered meep sounded and seven sets of shoulders shrugged in unison, all eyes focused on the empty doorway recently vacated by the Doctor.

Mere minutes passed before the Doctor burst back into the room wearing a chef's hat cocked at a slight angle, and a flurry of white jackets sailed through the air.  Chibi!Rose twirled in the new pink apron that declared her kitchen supervisor amidst the low grumble of meeping from the others.  The Doctor leaned on the counter next to her and eyed the grumblers, asking innocently, "Did someone else wish to wear the apron?"  Even chibi!Jack stepped back, dropped his eyes, and slid his arms into the white jacket without another complaint.

The Doctor followed chibi!Rose's directions and pulled out the large mixer and bowl, and soon the room was abuzz with activity.  Chibi!Sam and chibi!Ten tipped a bag of flour into the porcelain bowl, creating two brown eyed ghosts when the white cloud burst upwards.  Chibi!Rose giggled at the two astonished chibis trying to dust themselves off.

The Doctor rattled off the ingredients as the measurements were taken, then deposited them into the mixer: flour, sugar, brown sugar, salt, baking powder, eggs- He paused.  "Eggs?"  Chibi!Sam was draped over the top of the mixer pushing the speed buttons in accordance with the Doctor's directions and quickly pushed the off switch.  The silver attachments came to a sudden stop and the Doctor caught sight of chibi!Nine across the room standing next to the egg carton and refusing to push them any closer.  "There's no danger of you falling into the mixer," he reassured chibi!Nine even as he pulled out chibi!Carlisle, shaking him roughly until he released the fistfuls of brown sugar he'd been sneaking.

"Okay," the Doctor relented.  "You start on the frosting then."  To which chibi!Nine strode towards the bags of powdered sugar and a smaller bowl while chibi!Ten ran towards the eggs, making clucking noises under his breath.  The Doctor turned back in time to see chibi!Ten standing in a puddle of runny egg yolk, a cracked shell sitting atop his head and chibi!Nine looking smug.

Chibi!Rose hurried over, hiding a smile, and tried to distract chibi!Ten from exacting revenge while helping to wipe off the goo.  Chibi!Master was bent over the edge of the cake pan laughing at the chibi!Doctors until a glare from chibi!Rose convinced him to continue his own work.

He tied two squares of butter to the bottoms of his shoes then pointed the laser screwdriver in front of him and skated over the warm surface it created, letting the butter melt.  Soon he was joined by chibi!Carlisle and they began trying to outdo the other in a heated competition of skating manoeuvres.  Before it became too serious, the Doctor chased them both over the sides as he poured the batter into the middle of their playfield, chibi!Carlisle managing to stick a finger in the batter before flopping onto his back from all the exertion and smacked his lips in happy contentment.

As the Doctor placed the cake into the oven, there was a loud yell followed by muffled thumps.  He finished setting the timer and turned to find out what his smaller counterparts were up to now.

"No no no!" yelled the Doctor as he reached for chibi!Nine and chibi!Ten, who were busy wrestling in the stiffening frosting.  Handfuls of pink splotched against the Doctor's brown striped suit as he made his way towards the two combatants.  Chibi!Master gleefully jumped up and down on the plastic bottle of food colouring lying on its side, the red spray adding more chaos to the battle until chibi!Sam managed to topple him with a body tackle.  "STOP!" shouted the Doctor as he submerged three bodies into the milk pitcher and brought them back out sputtering and flailing.

The Doctor set the bedraggled threesome in the sink and gave them a stern talking to, then let chibi!Rose hose them off until they agreed to play nice.  The Doctor then placed the three individuals at opposite ends of the kitchen with the threat of  'don't make me tell Rose' hanging over each of them.

Chibi!Master shook his laser screwdriver, which only sputtered and sparked before going dull, and sat down dejectedly, a disgruntled meep silenced by a look from the Doctor.

It wasn't a perfect replica of the photo as they set the finished cake next to the book on the kitchen table.  But it was a close enough likeness, the Doctor determined, until chibi!Carlisle pointed out the obvious.  There was no sculptured centrepiece.

Chibi!Rose gave a surprised meep and the Doctor's head shot up.  Chibi!Giac pulled a handkerchief off a covered mound with a flourish to reveal the chocolate sculpture of Cupid.  Chibi!Rose's face went bright red as she averted her eyes hurriedly and the Doctor caught himself stuttering, for once at a loss for words.

The sculpture wasn't exactly Cupid, more a Cupid pose, with the sculpted figure holding a bow and arrow, but the likeness of chibi!Jack was perfect in every detail, right down to the bits.  Chibi!Giac beamed with pride at his masterpiece and chibi!Jack grinned while flexing.  The Doctor groaned imagining the slap he would be feeling shortly.

There was a sudden cry of glee as a fiery bolt shot across the room landing smack in the middle of the sculpture and melted part of the chocolate.  Chibi!Jack cried in dismay as chibi!Giac grabbed a toothpick and nodded at the Doctor's quick instructions.  As Chibi!Rose comforted a distraught chibi!Jack, the Doctor dared a glance at chibi!Master, who stood frozen, waiting for further punishment, the laser screwdriver still pointed directly at the sculpture.  Chibi!Master shrunk backwards as the Doctor advanced on him and held out his hand signalling to turn over the screwdriver.  Chibi!Master hastily pulled the item behind his back and feigned innocence, immediately giving up the charade when he was lifted by the scruff of his neck and stared into the eyes of the Doctor.  He meekly handed the tool over and shrugged submissively before being placed on the table.

The Doctor positioned the now diapered chibi!Jack chocolate sculpture on the cake as an exclamation was heard in the doorway behind him.  He spun in surprise to see Rose standing there, shopping bags slowly dropping towards the floor as her eyes swept over the once immaculate kitchen.  He gulped guiltily when her eyes stopped on him and his mouth opened to begin an explanation when a tug on his jacket and whispered meep startled him into action and he stepped to the side with a sheepish grin

Rose's open mouth dropped even further as the bags she had been holding fell unnoticed to the floor and her eyes grew wide as she stared at the cake in the middle of the table.

"Happy Valentine's Day, Rose," said the Doctor quietly, still trying to gauge her reaction.  Rose hurled herself towards the Doctor in a squeal of delight, her momentum twirling them as she wrapped him in a hug.  The room burst into animated laughter, high-fives and hugs amongst the chibis as Rose kissed the Doctor soundly then hugged and kissed each chibi in turn.

Full of cake and ice cream and the chibi's sent to bed, Rose let the Doctor lead her out of the kitchen.  As she surveyed the disastrous mess left behind and turned the lights off she smiled.  It was worth it, she thought and followed the Doctor.
