When around a person for frequent and long periods of time, one tends to see that person at both their best and their worst. And naturally, one learns to stay the heck out of that person’s way at those worst times.
Consequently, Jin had learned over the years to be conveniently busy during the heart of baseball season.
“NO! NO NO NO! What was that you blind moron?! That was clearly a strike!”
Sometimes Jin wasn’t completely successful at this task.
He cleared his throat. “Uh, would you like me to get you another beer?”
“You idiot!”
Jin was hoping that was aimed at the television. “Is that a no?”
“Huh?” Kame seemed to suddenly remember Jin’s presence. “Ah no I’m- Oh you have got to be kidding me!” Kame was on his feet now, pacing around, although not very far since he wanted to stay within close sight of the TV, so he was more or less walking around in a small circle. “NO!” his voice cracked at the intensity of the statement.
Jin scratched at his chest and let his gaze wander around the walls and ceiling of the apartment awkwardly. He shouldn’t have asked. He should know by now that you leave the man alone when his team is playing.
“On second thought, I think a beer would be helpful right now.” Kame muttered.
Jin nodded and quickly got up, eager for any task that would get him out of this room. How on earth he had managed to be in Kame’s apartment when the Giants and the Tigers were playing was beyond him. He thought he had learned to pay enough attention to the baseball schedule to not make this mistake anymore. If he had learned anything from the many years of dating and close friendship with Kame, it was to always pay attention to the baseball schedule.
He grabbed two beers out of the refrigerator at a remarkably slow pace, slowing down a little more when Kame began to loudly declare his hatred for all of Osaka from the living room.
It was in these times that Jin was assured beyond all doubt that what he felt for Kame was indeed love. Why else would he put up with this every year? Jin’s calendar even had special marks on it for particularly dangerous game days.
He wondered briefly if men dating women kept as close an eye on the time of the month as he kept on baseball season.
Kame was quiet now, had been for a few minutes, and Jin couldn’t figure out what that meant. Either it was a particularly long commercial break, or Kame had passed out in a fit of rage.
Jin considered making a run for it.
“Jin! Where’s that beer?”
Damn it. “Coming Kazu!” He promptly returned to the living room where Kame was silently staring at the screen. It was a commercial, and Kame was patiently waiting for the game to come back on.
Kame took the beer from Jin without sparing him a glance, and Jin cautiously settled himself beside him on the couch, although not too close; Jin had learned the hard way that baseball with Kame was definitely not a cuddle time. Sitting too far from Kame was also a dangerous thing to do, another thing he had learned over the years.
Jin tried to pay attention to the game once it came back on, doing his best to look sufficiently upset or excited with Kame for each play. Jin didn’t even understand why Kame seemed so riled up; the Giants were winning for crying out loud. But there was no way in hell that Jin was going to ask Kame about it.
He really didn’t understand Kame’s obsession with this sport, but Kame put up with soccer for him, so he supposed he could deal with it. It’s just that Kame took it so seriously…
“Would you still date me if I were a Tigers fan?”
The question came out of his mouth before he really had time to properly think it over, and when Kame’s head snapped in his direction he immediately cursed his own stupidity. Good grief Akanishi don’t anger it.
Jin mustered up what he hoped was a calming smile, but Kame’s flat stare did not waver. He chuckled awkwardly. “W-well…? Would you?” It was a valid question after all.
Kame’s hand was in the air, waving around vaguely, his gaze back on the television, voice suspiciously calm; “Get out. Get out of my apartment.”
Five minutes ago he would have taken the order to heart and ran, but now, he felt this was important, so he ignored his survival instincts in favor of receiving an answer. “Kame.”
Kame glared at the screen.
“Kazuya.”
“This had better be completely hypothetical.”
“What if it wasn’t?”
Now Kame was looking at him. “What aren’t you telling me?”
“Just answer the question!”
“Answer mine first!”
Jin huffed. “You wouldn’t, wouldn’t you?! You would totally dump me right here and now if I suddenly declared my undying loyalty to that team!”
“Jin…”
“I can’t believe this!”
Kame sighed dramatically. “I wouldn’t dump you Jin. Don’t be ridiculous.”
Jin sulked, and huffed again.
“I’m not going to lie, it would put a bit of a strain on our relationship.”
Jin sulked some more, now glaring at Kame.
Kame chuckled, “Seriously Jin, we wouldn’t see each other for months. If you were a Tigers fan, there’s no way we would be able to be anywhere near each other during baseball season. We’d kill each other.” Kame’s smile was gentler as he slid closer to Jin, putting an arm over his shoulders. “Of course, we’d have the rest of the year to make up for it.”
Jin was trying hard to remain offended, but it was difficult with Kame so close.
Kame leaned in and nuzzled his nose against Jin’s cheek, “You’re more important to me than baseball, Jin.”
Jin rolled his eyes. “Pfft. Yeah right.”
“I’m serious.” Kame nibbled on Jin’s earlobe. “In case you haven’t noticed, your ridiculous little hypothetical questions made me miss the end of the seventh inning.” More nibbling, and a few soft, tiny kisses.
Jin’s eyes widened a little. “I’m sorry!” he said quickly, “I didn’t mean… I just wondered and-“
A mouth covering his own successfully silenced him. Kame’s tongue probed at his lips and then inside his mouth for several moments before pulling away, eliciting a groan from Jin. “My silly baka.” Kame chuckled again, pulling away completely to focus once again on the television screen. “Of course I would forgive my little airheaded boyfriend for having such silly sports choices.”
Jin again tried hard to get offended at that, but a smile came to his face anyway, and he dared to slide up closer to Kame and rest his head in his lap contentedly, his boyfriend’s hand quickly beginning to stroke through his hair.
