return to civilization

So Friday I'm in the middle of taking a shower and the power goes out. I call the electric company and they can't tell me anything because it's in my roommate's name, and she's out of town. I flip the brakers a couple of times, and try calling again, but they tell me if I want to talk to billing I'll have to wait about thirty minutes. I had to be at work in twenty, so I was shit out of luck. So even though the bill wasn't due until the 27th, Annaka made an emergency payment but of course it's the weekend and they don't turn your electricity on unless it's an emergency. So we decided to rough it, which for me consists of getting a hotel room which Annie paid for (thank you Annie!).

Since it was only for one night, I packed light. Packing light for me is basically eveything in my bathroom and three outfits, or whatever I can fit in my suitcase and still be able to get it in the trunk of my car without hydraulics. So we watched HBO all night and then we went out to Ivonne and MIke's last show. We had trouble justifying eight bucks for a show, but we paid anyways. I wanted to go to the Legs Diamond fashion show at Elysium but we figured since we paid so much to get in we'd stay. For us paying anything is usually too much. But this was for our friends. So then in the morning we checked out and I was so tired I almost fell asleep in my car. So we went back to our hot apartment and took naps. Since a day cannot go by in either of our lives without minor emergency it was no surprise that Annaka "lost" her purse. I told her to go back and look under the covers at the hotel. She did, and voila!!! I know her too well.

So we went to this girl Katie's house all night and got ready. She is a friend of Annaka's that she will be working with soon. Her apartment (and I never thought I'd say this) is cuter than ours!!! I was in love! It's a two story townhome with a fireplace and an upstairs wet bar, lots of windows, 2 1/2 baths, enormous bedrooms, and a washer and dryer, and she pays less than we do! However, she lives even further out on 183 than we do.

So we went out and decided not to go to Le Privelege. We only go because our friends go, and I've only been once when I really enjoyed the music. Even though the music at Elysium isn't exactly groundbreaking, at least I'm comfortable there and I feel taken care of. I like it there because it's dark and loud and there aren't a bunch of girls in really awful outfits running around yelling "Omigod! You look just like me! You are so cute! Let's get together and listen to Belle and Sebastian and see who can come up with the least matching ensemble!!!". Okay, that was mean. I'll move on. We talked to some pretty funny people at the club. Annie didn't drink but I think she still had an okay time. We ate huge dinners right before we went out. I couldn't really drink beer either but someone gave me an apple martini that was really strong and I got a little buzzed. Oh yeah, back to the electricity thing.

I called this morning and they said there was no reason why it should be off. So they instruct me to go downstairs and they tell me which meter is mine so I can see if it has a yellow tag (which would indicate that they turned it off). It didn't. So they finally tell me that there is a main braker above the meter in a box. Thanks for telling me the first seven times I called!!! Is this common knowledge? So I flip it and the electricity comes back on....for thirty seconds, and shuts off. I call the apartments and we finally are told that we had a bad braker and they replaced it. So we suffered needlessly. Do you know how much it sucks to be without electricity? In August??!! I just thew away the contents of the icebox. I also bought some exciting new records which I couldn't listen to. I will list them here for your enjoyment.

Communards - Don't Leave me This Way
Communards - Never Can Say Goodbye

These are two wonderfully terrible disco covers with the lead singer of Bronski Beat. What was I thinking?

Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark - Architecture and Morality
A Flock of Seagulls - self titled
George Michael - Faith (single)

And the two albums I'm most excited about...
Visage - self titled (I already have it, but not on vinyl. I fucking love this record!)
Cabaret Voltaire - Micro-Phonies

I haven't bought records in so long. It's a very satisfying way to spend money. I also got a book by my idol Dave Barry. He is so funny. Funnier than me, if you can fathom such a humorous person! If you haven't heard of him, he writes a syndicated satire column for the Miami Herald. If you don't think he's funny you can't be my friend.

Well, I believe I've made this entry officially long enough to where no one will ever read it unless forced to by gunpoint in some bizarre form of torture. Time to get ready for work.
