3G and I-Mode

Feb 18, 2006 15:27

Around this month, Smart has introduced its 3G service and the offerings for those who carry the right cellphones are bound to be mouth-watering. In addition, NTT DoCoMo has taken 7% of PLDT (Smart's parent company -- the largest telco in the Philippines) in order to make its I-Mode technology more accessible outside Japan.

What does it mean for us?

Imagine being on a bus and yet stuck in traffic and you're not able to catch your daily serving of Naruto. Anyway, you whip out your Nokia N90 and connect to get video streaming to the Big Two while sitting there. Damn wonderful, isn't it? Suppose you want to text your auntie down in Yokohama, wishing for that special birthday gift. What can you do? Your Sony-Ericsson cell, configured to do double duty as a hybrid 3G/I-Mode phone will help you out. Blows MMS incompatibility problems out of the water.

However, the one catch here is that once the 3G service becomes regular, be prepared to pay more for the content.
