Apparently a bunch of bored cellphone techs/freaks used some telemarketing gear: a PC SMS program with a random phone number generator glued to a Globe prefix, a boilerplate text with a random name field (to a random name generator), then a bucket full of (used or stolen or new but CHEAP) simcards to plug into a simcard reader onto the USB port.
Or a phone with an open port to which they swap sims like crazy, trying to lose the trail. Some of them are fake lawyers with fake accents.
They then all set up a ring posing as the "Philippine Communication Corporation Network System" (that building is currently abandoned), the "Philippine Charity Foundation" (with bank account numbers), and some others, including a TV station, government agencies, and legit companies.
Simply put, because they're texting freaks hungry for loads, they'll do anything to get their load, and pass it around to their friends. Or build a mansion. Or buy a Porsche 911. Or buy as much crack meth. Or paint the town red.
Bunch of retards.
To be careful, remember that legit promo numbers include a DTI code and a FOUR-DIGIT number supplied by the carrier, not from a simcard.
Anyway, check up with the Philippine DTI if it's a fake or not, thru telephone numbers 811-8231 to 33 local 1216.
Makes me in favor of the amendment of a law requiring simcard registration. To the telecoms: while you're earning, your customers are getting ripped off!
Here's a sampling of (disposable) numbers culled from the intarwebs, from January 2007 to this moment:
