My own personal opinion on the verdict: there is that premise of "the user and the used".

Nicole was, IMHO, being used by the militant groups to advance further their anti-US propaganda; while the others have to use melodrama like you said to sensationalize the case.

Imagine that, a night of pleasure turned into a year of chaotic confusion all because of other people spoiling an otherwise simple case of rape.
