I am the one who . . .
I am the one who is concerned for our environment.
I am the one who donates to charities.
I am the one who is shy about taking action (pickets, marches, etc.) for the causes that mean the most to me. It makes me question my commitment, yet I end up reminding myself that that's just not my gift. I have other gifts. Is that just making excuses?
I am the one who is loyal in friendships, relationships, work agreements, etc.
What do you have to give me?
I am a reminder of your commitments, of your passion for those causes that tug at your heart strings. I am a reminder of what you give back to the world through your involvement in these causes. Even if you aren't out there yelling with the crowd, you give money to the organization so it can host such events to begin with. You make phone calls. You talk to people on the personal basis and share your knowledge so that they can be informed. Not everyone can yellers or the marchers. You are the committed supporter who backs those who can.
What do you want from me?
I want you to honor and respect the ways you give to society. But that doesn't mean you can sit back on your laurels. Don't ever stop giving/doing for those causes that tug at you. You wouldn't be able to live with yourself if you did. You wouldn't respect yourself, just as you don't respect the people who turn on a dime on Survivor. Take credit in what you do, and keep doing.
How will I remember?
You receive notices of special causes in e-mail and snail mail on an almost weekly basis. Everytime you see one, decide what your action will do. Your action doesn't have to be donating money if money is tight. It may just be telling your friends and family about it and they can pass along the word and maybe do something more themselves. You can't beat the people who send forwards. Be one who starts the forwards. Get the information out there. There are many ways you can help a cause. Choose one, or more if you are up to it, and feel good about whatever it is you decide to do.
