A Way With Words - Diary entry - April 21, 2014

Last week Jenny told us Barindra was coming to Boston for the marathon. Totally casual, like it was one of her friends that we had never met and had no connection to. Jack put down his fork, looked at me. She said a friend of his from Toronto was running in the race and he decided to come too, so he could meet her. Us, that is. Nice of her to remember that Jack knew his father. That’s what she thinks.

Took me all these months to get used to knowing that Kaj is dead. Car accident, Barindra told Jenny. Poor kid was 12 when it happened. His mother died too, apparently. He was taken in by the family of his best friend.

Jenny seemed way more excited about the visit on Saturday morning, the day he was flying in from Vancouver. She asked me please could I make one of my curries. Jack looked at me, raised his eyebrows. How could I say no? Even though I didn’t feel like I could face any food right then, or ever again. I wondered how I was gonna be able to get him alone, ask him all the questions I had. Jack the mind reader said after she left the kitchen: We’ll all go to the race. That way you can get him alone and ask your questions.

Well nothing happened the way we expected.
