A Way With Words - Chapter 42b

Mar 09, 2012 09:19

Note: In chapter 13 (third-person narrative), Ennis visited the Fell home for the second time. If you want to reread it, it's HERE. Since I wrote that chapter, I've changed Jay's mother's first name to Rachel.
In which Ennis visits Jay's parents' house for the first time )

I liked looking in on the world of Jay's parents. They are unique and wonderful and hard to appreciate and well parents always have pre-conceived notions as to what their Children will end up being like but it was wonderful to see the interactions. Joe

It's always interesting to meet a friend's parents (well, once you're an adult) and sometimes you can think they're great, but of course you didn't have to live with them. LOL

Thanks for the new chapter. I've been trying to understand why some chapters leave me with such a sense of sorrow and this one helped.

AWWW is not only about Ennis' journey to find his true self, but it is also the journey of his closest friends. Ennis' relationships with Joe, Jay and Kaj are painful to read because he wants so much to have a deeper, long-lasting relationship with all of them, but of course as readers, we know his "true love" will be Jack! But these relationship don't work out in the long run not just because of that. Ennis' lovers haven't found their true selves either.

I was surprised to read that Jay was seeing both Ennis and her editor at the same time, but it's all part of her trying to figure herself out, isn't it? Sometimes I haven't liked Ennis' lovers, but this chapter just leaves me hoping Jay will find her own true love after Ennis and her dad's level of contentment.

I also loved the movie scenes Rachel painted. Hmmm... I wonder what movie that might be? LOL

All these characters are young, and most people are struggling to find their true selves at that age.

I left very vague whatever happened between Jay and Ralph - in fact some time ago I went back and tweaked the early chapter in which an affair is made explicit because I wasn't sure I whether I really wanted her to have one with the editor. I'm leaving my options open.

Hmmm...

Jay ran her finger over the picture. "The colors aren't the same, though. But she insists it has the same feel…" She gave me a wry smile. "Maybe she knew you were coming."

Banking on destiny is a dangerous game. As we can see from the glimpses into Jay's future, this will be something she'll be kicking herself over for the rest of her life.

Banking on destiny is a dangerous game.

Why I always roll my eyes when someone declares they've met their soulmate.

and that memory with the white peacock - so beautiful !!

I was pretty sure people were expecting something else to happen when Jack went to Ennis' apartment!

Glad you liked the white peacock. I actually saw one at a park in Belgium a number of years ago. A few minutes later I saw a family with a little girl dressed like the one described here. Unfortunately, I didn't arrange a picture of them together, something I've always regretted so I made up for it in this story.

Holy Schmoly, get ready for that Nobel Prize. This just took my breath away. It's words, words on a page, and yet it's so visual that my mind is actually seeing all this as I read, presenting it in colours, in images. You've no idea how much I love the repeated colour themes here, and the distinct contrasts, and the way you turn them into characterization, into metaphors and imagery that tell us so much about these people, give us indications and more pieces to the puzzle as to how they all tie together and how they impact and influence one another ( ... )
