We Gotta Pray Just To Make It (Rain) Today

Nov 13, 2007 11:25

Well, today in the Peach State, our Governor, Sonny Perdue, is leading a group of legislators and ministers in prayer, beseeching the Almighty to give us some rain before the drought wreaks more havoc on our overtaxed water supply. (If you aren't from Georgia and haven't heard about it, we are in a water crunch due to the drought, and in many cities and towns water use restrictions have gone into effect.) It is expected that some demonstrations will take place in protest of Perdue's prayer meeting, as it does go against the whole "separation of church and state" thing.

Although I agree with the protesters on this point, I am more opposed to the Governor's prayer program because I feel that he and the Georgia Assembly have failed their constituency by not addressing issues that have been around a long time related to Georgia's growth (particularly in Atlanta) and the issues surrounding it, especially in relation to the water supply. When my wife and I moved here nearly two and a half years ago, we saw some local talk show, and on it the speakers were addressing the fact that Atlanta's water supply was in jeopardy due to rapid growth and lack of conservation. If people knew there was a problem then, why wasn't anything done to head off a potential water crisis? I mean, I do believe in prayer, and I think that God answers the prayers of those who diligently seek His blessing. I also believe, though, that God helps those who help themselves, and I think that Georgia's powers-that-be haven't quite lived up to their end of that deal. And besides, what a better opportunity for our GOP officials to continue their regular display of sanctimony, which automatically makes me skeptical?

But do pray, Sonny. God is mighty and merciful, and on occasion has been known to forgive a fool or two. And Lord knows we need the rain.
