Calling all system builders...

So my main computer, a desktop PC that I built about 5 years ago, just took a crap and died. There was a power outtage about 2 weeks ago and when I tried to start the PC, the lights would come on and the fans would run, it accessed the DVD drive and a HD, but that was it. I never got a BIOS message to my screen and I never heard the internal *beep* that would always play when I started the computer. Bummer. I got it to restart once, and it ran until last night, but now it's gone. Argh.

So I'm in the process of picking out my new components on NewEgg, and I'm wondering if I can at least salvage my hard drives and my installed software by swapping the old drives into the new machine. Does the OS have drivers that interact with the MB? I'll have a different speed RAM and a new processor and probably a new graphics card (my old one is an AGP which seems to have been left in the dust).

I'm also a little up in the air about the specific MB and processor to get. I'm looking at the ASUS Striker II with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700.

Thoughts?
