"I notice," Kaoru began after a moment, mouth twisting in clear reproach, "that you haven't asked to spar with me."

Squalo stopped playing with the sword he was supposedly weighting and turned to look at her with a blink that clearly showed she'd caught him off guard.

"No?"

"But," Kaoru went on, slightly irritated, "you asked me to teach you, and you asked for a spar with pretty much anyone who grabs a sword during morning training."

She looked at him expectantly. Squalo couldn't, for the life of him, figure out what the heck was going on. So he blinked again, sword hanging down his side, held in loose fingers.

"So?"

Kaoru rolled her eyes.

"I want to know why."

She'd been wondering, considering he stopped by an hour or so during training every morning, like clockwork, and followed her instructions and took her critique with barely a dry remark and a sardonic yes, ma'am, before he wandered off to challenge whoever was unfortunate enough to be holding a sword at the time. But he never asked her. He'd teased her about it, when they first met, but he had never actually gotten to it. And it bug her, for reason she couldn't quite explain.

"Oh," Squalo said, displaying his eloquence in full. He shrugged. "I want to learn your style, I just don't want to add it into mine."

"Excuse me?"

"I learn styles by fighting them," he went on, as if they were discussing the weather. "All I need is to fight a technique once to learn how to use it myself. And anyway, any style I fight, it ends up melding with my own in the end. I don't want to add yours to mine, though."

"And why not?" Kaoru asked, perhaps a tad more forcefully than she had intended. "Why would you learn something you don't want to use?"

Are you mocking me?

"Your style isn't meant to kill, now is it?" Squalo grinned wryly, and looked, oddly enough, both older and younger than he was. "It'd be... disrespectful, to mix it up with mine and end up using it for the one thing you didn't make it for."

"Why learn at all, then?"

"Who knows, maybe I'll find something I want to protect one day," he shrugged, and she had the strange notion that he was mocking himself, through her. It was the weirdest thing. "You know, without the killing."

Kaoru stared at Squalo. Squalo stared back with that placid, irritating, smug, self-confident way of his. Summarily, Kaoru ended the moment by smacking his forehead with her knuckles.

"I don't see how you're going to protect anything with such a shoddy form. It's like you don't even know how to properly hold a sword!"

Squalo snickered.

"Yes, ma'am."
