She was a coward, really, deep down. Oh she could fight, and she often did. She went on missions and protected those dear to her. But she couldn't face anything internally.
She was starting to grow comfortable in this world; like she belonged. Felt like maybe she could start moving passed the accident, passed losing Yuu. But she held onto that past like it was the only thing anchoring her to the world.
It was a weight, dark and suffocating. And Rei smiled and buried it deep. She'd carry this burden on her own, she'd told herself. The vivid nightmares, the sleepless nights. The overwhelming guilt. She couldn't burden anyone else with it.
Miku knew, of course--but she was starting to find her own place in this world, living her own life.
So Rei stayed quiet. A smile here. A laugh and a hug there. If she spent her time worrying about everyone else, maybe no one would notice the depression on her own heart.
And then that invasion had happened. A pressing into her mind, her memories, digging them up, real and raw.
Kaoru.
Rei isn't sure she likes it or even wants it. But it's...nice. Kaoru's so earnest. She's strong. She's beautiful and kind and Rei can't help but feel jealous of the younger girl. She's so sure of herself, of her purpose and what she's going to do.
Rei barely knows what tomorrow will hold; can't think of the future she doesn't think she deserves.
But Kaoru's hand is warm in hers', and it feels nice to rest her cheek against the girl's shoulder. Koaru whispers promises to never give up on, to help her carry the burden.
The weight, even if Rei doesn't want it to, lightens.
Rei feels like she can be a little stronger.
