Today is my company's "Holiday Luncheon." I really hate the word luncheon. Who made it up?
Anyway, it occured to me in passing that maybe I should dress up a little. After all it's a big catered event with people coming in from all over the place, and there will be prizes given out, increasing (slightly) the odds that I will be looked at. But I decided against dressing up for two reasons.
1) I don't have anything to dress up in. I wear my work clothes to work four days a week, and I've already worn them all this week. I don't HAVE anything else nice to put on.
and
2) I don't LIKE dressing up. It makes me feel uncomfortable. The only dressing up I've ever enjoyed was back in the bad old days- and that consisted mainly of leather and boots (and leather boots!) and I couldn't really wear any of that to a company function, even if I still had the clothes.
So, I'm wearing my normal Friday gettup- oversized black sweatshirt, blue jeans, tennis shoes that Zack outgrew a few months ago with a hole in the toe. I feel really comfortable and happy in my favorite clothes, and that should count for something. I look like hell, sure, but I FEEL festive, goddamnit!
Anyway, judging from the clothes some of my coworkers chose to wear today, I'm thinking I made the right choice on all counts. It looks more like Halloween in here today. One woman looks like Liberace with WAY too much gold close to her face, another looks like Mrs. Claus gone fat-n-trampy, and another looks like Stevie Nicks back in the 70's or 80's. This look is okay by me, but she's also spinning around a lot to watch her skirts flair out, and knowing that she's insane doesn't help the picture too much.
I like my Friday clothes just fine. We get out early today too, and I can go home early if I can find the right bus to do the job.
